I don't think I'll be able to fathom how people find Paterno the sympathetic figure here, let alone are actually outraged he has been forced to quit before the end of the season.

 

To me it just once again shows how this whole situation occured in the first place. Everyone seems okay in ignoring the moral obligation...just go ahead and ignore the crimes that have been committed.

My feeling is that those who are ambivalent to Joes actions concerned with this scandal, were, prior to it, hoping he would get one more good year and fade gracefully from the scene, not be forced out, like Bobby Bowden at FSU. And it looked like this year would be it. I think the reaction of some has more to do with the disappointment of another icon falling from grace, than anything.

Penn State acted out of fear instead of with mind. There were absolutely no FACTS to firing him. As others have said, Paterno is the blame guy in this whole situation, a situation in which it shouldn't have even came to him. The GA, once he seen the act, should have went straight to the police instead of going to Paterno to begin with. Yes Paterno could have went to the police, but there is a policy and procedure in place at every job. There is a chain of command. He went with what he thought was right and the AD did nothing about it, not Paterno's fault. I feel horrible even having to listen and read this whole mess of a situation, but to solely place the blame on Paterno is laughable and completely uncalled for and it shows that people want the quickest answer to any situation whether it's the right one or not. They wanted a scape goat and it's awful to see his time at Penn State end like this.

Chain or command? Is that a joke? He was freaking Joe Pa, he was the top dog! What he said went! What he did is blatant that he placed the football program above the victims. Plain and simple. Everyone has to go including Joe Pa for the greater good of PSU.

Yes, if the GA had witnessed Sandusky breaking a college or NCAA rule...then you could say McQuery and Paterno should have followed "policy and procedure". However, the action that was witnessed was against the LAW! It's no different than if a murder had been witnessed. To say that anyone is totally absolved of any responsibility just because they passed the information on to their superiors and are satisfied with that, is incomprehensible to me.

No one is placing all of the blame on Joe Pa. But I don't feel sorry for him because his failure to do anything likely meant more kids were molested by this animal. Joe and the GA should have continued to check in to see if their "boss" reported the incident to the police. And eventually, and by eventually I mean Ina short time if he didn't they should have reported it themselves.

 

The GA should have called the police immediately.

I can't agree with that. I believe that the decisions were made with mind and fear. Paterno did what he had to legally, but I am not convinced that he did all he should have. If you ask me, everyone involved should get the ax. As this whole thing unfolds, I don't believe that the disturbing information is over; it's going to be coming for some time.

 

We are not talking about matters that are even close to the level that many college programs have gotten in to trouble over. We are talking about the sexual abuse of kids, and chances are that this went on with plenty more than were reported. An example had to be made and I am glad that it was. I don't care about how long someone has been with a program or its prestige; when something this harsh takes place, harsh consequences need to be served.

So if Mcquery saw Joe's son being raped by Sandusky, and reported it to Joe Pa, do you think Joe's actions would've been the same? That's all you need to ask in deciding if Joe Pa did enough.
