I think I'll stick around to watch people who live vicariously through high school kids get personally insulted when that kid's coach gets criticized.

The way I see it is if you rush for over 8K yards in your career your are going to inevitably have to put up some large numbers in some blowout games against weaker teams. Everyone has them on their schedule. The question I would have is how did Homer obtain the record? Did he put up big numbers against inferior opponents? I would think he would have had to in order to break the record.

I don't see how schedule comes into play here. It's about how the coach handles the schedule. I have no doubt that if Dale Mueller chose to, he could have gotten Pat Towles the all-time passing record by keeping the starters in for 3 or 4 quarters.

Good thing the KHSAA doesn't care about "fairness" then. There's be a lot whole of records that look different, wouldn't there?

 

 

You're probably right. And those records would go under the same scrutiny if brought to light. In this day and age of technology if someone does something perceived as unsportsmanlike then you better believe it will be talked about on the world wide web.

Show me the coach who left in his stud running back when already up 40-50+ points with a running clock to get him more carries. I think it is safe to say Towles would have the single season passing record.

I get that. I don't agree with the tactics, but I hate it for Jude that his record has an asterisk beside it for many people. Maybe no other coach has been accused of going to such extremes to get a record, but I don't see one record that I would feel confident was completely done without playing that player in times when he should/could have been out.

Highland schedule will not allow Towles (which is deffinately a better QB than Robinson was) the ability to throw 92 td in a season. Their offense is not made that way either.And yes Lone Oak and Haskins ran the score up tremendously on far inferior competition that year to get the record. But 4 yrs. later nobody remembers that. So i say great job JJ. That is what highschool football is about. Setting goals and seeing if you can achieve them. As for Matney i know nothing of him or his coaching staff but i would have done the same thing if i had a kid that has busted his tail for me for 4 yrs. and was that close to a state record. Knowing the next week he had to play one of the best teams in kentucky highschool history for two reasons. 1) because he probably loves the kid and wants him to break the record. 2) to take that" hype" of setting the record out of the equation going into a tough week of game planning. JMHO

With the way Matney used Jude over the past few years in blowout games there is no doubt in my mind he would throw long bombs with Towles as his qb in the 4th quarter when ahead of Harrison County by 63 points.

 

 

I'd try to get my kid the record also by giving him as many carries as possible but I wouldn't let the other team score to get the ball back and I wouldn't jeopardize my stud running back's health in a game out of hand to get him the record either. He'd get it honestly without us changing much or not at all. I'd love the kid enough to not have my tactics overshadowing his accomplishment.

Really? High School football is about setting records? If a players set a goal to Set an individual record, then he's not being a very good teammate. Sound like JJ wouldn't and didn't do that, but he did set the record only because he was left in the game and it sounds like JC has no other weapons. I have never liked individual records because they always seem to be held by players who played on very one-dimensional teams. The fact is that High School invidiual records will never be achieved by the best players, but rather good players who happen to play on teams willing to give them 35 carries against lesser opponents. Perhaps, it would have been better to develop some JV RBs by giving them some carries with a Varsity Line blocking for them. That's how you continue to build success. Sounds like he may not have leveraged this aspect of what Jude could have provided for the future of JC. Get a comfortable lead and see what the players of the future can do.

 

I will guarantee you that Vocke could have had 600 yards last night against Paris. Instead, 5 different people ran the ball and at least 4 different receivers had passes thrown to them. This was all during Varsity time. If you add in the JV and Freshman time, I'm guessing that at least 20 different kids touched the ball last night. VOR will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think 6 different kids scored touchdowns. This "Is What High School Football Is All About!" It's also how the traditions are maintained and "The Machine" is fed.

Matney probably did want the recod more for himself, Matney is about Matney,.

Having said that iin no way do I think that Jude's record is tainted, the kid did what he was supposed to do, run the football to the best of his ability. A player cannot control that he was in the game when he probably should have been sitting but when a player is in the game he should play to the best of his abillity so don't belittle the kid for that.

I know why this thread was started and don't disagree with it but Coach Matney really doesn't desrerve a thread that is about only him no matter what the subject is. JMO
