November 1, 201114 yr Link. Republican gubernatorial nominee David Williams criticized Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear on Tuesday for participating in what Williams said was a Hindu religious ceremony last week during a "ground blessing" for a new manufacturing plant in Elizabethtown. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I think Williams makes a decent point when he says that Beshear could have participated in the groundbreaking without participating in the religious aspect of it. However, Williams intent wasn't that maybe a governor shouldn't participate in any religious ceremony. Look at the following quote and you can really tell what his true meaning is. "If I'm a Christian, I don't participate in Jewish prayers. I'm glad they do that. I don't participate in Hindu prayers. I don't participate in Muslim prayers. I don't do that," Williams later told reporters. "To get down and get involved and participate in prayers to these polytheistic situations, where you have these Hindu gods that they are praying to, doesn't appear to me to be in line with what a governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky ought to be doing." I take that to mean that Williams is completely fine if Beshear participates in Williams religious ceremony, or what Williams deems as a suitable relgious ceremony for the Commonwealth of Kentucky. But to sit down there with his legs crossed, saying Hindu prayers, and with a dot on his forehead with incense burning all around him isn't acceptable...

November 1, 201114 yr As governor representing KY I would think Beshear would have begged off. I can also see Williams other point about if he's a Christian, should Beshear have participated in a Hindu ceremony? I would think that's something for each person to decide for themselves. I'm not sure how each religion views members actually participating in another's religious ceremony. Another week and this garbage will be over. Thank God.
November 1, 201114 yr I really am amazed at what a poor campaign Williams has run and how little traction he has gained. I thought this race would be closer than it is.

November 1, 201114 yr I don't see anything wrong with him attending the ceremony. The company is a foreign company investing in a plant here in Kentucky. It was a part of the planned opening. We are not a theocracy in Kentucky, no state religion. I would think that as a "state" event, the Governor should participate fully. I'd expect the same if he were invited to attend the wedding of someone who is a client of Kentucky who is Jewish and is getting married. This was an event hosted by an investor. I personally feel that if the Governor had to err on the side of caution in upsetting them, he should attend, rather than defer.
November 1, 201114 yr Why did you think this race would be close? Well, if you use the the P&R forum of BGP as a barometer, I would think the state was overwhelmingly anti-Breshear and wanting to oust him despite the consequences.
November 1, 201114 yr Why did you think this race would be close? I definitely thought it would be closer than it is. I expected Beshear to be tough to beat. I just can't believe how bad Williams is running. Kentucky has been pretty conservative in recent elections and Republicans have been winning a lot of the big races. I know the state races have been the last area of Democrat strength but with the Tea Party momentum and the right leaning voters, I really thought Williams would at least be respectable and had an outside chance at getting the race close enough to put a scare in Beshear. Beshear basically isn't even campaigning 100% for his own race any more. He is spending time helping all the other Democrat candidates. This race has turned into a major loss for the Republicans and could be even worse if Beshear has coat tails to carry the slate to Frankfort with him. Add in the fact that Williams is out of the Senate and this is shaping up to be the biggest Democrat election win in recent memory.
November 1, 201114 yr ^ All polling I've seen recently has had Democrats leading (in some cases by large margins) in all statewide races. I don't know much about House and Senate districts across the commonwealth.

Go back and check out how many supporters he has on here.

I don't know much about House and Senate districts across the commonwealth. Kentucky always leans Democratic locally, but the Republicans seem to dominate on a national level. Maybe we like liberalism locally, but don't want it going to anyone outside of the commonwealth!
