Working in tobacco. Hated pulling plants. Housing wasn't too bad, but hot and sticky. Scattering the sticks was the worst, I am not a real strong person, so I couldn't carry many at a time....had to make lots of trips while fighting off the heat, sweat, weeds, bees and tabacco worms.

 

The worst single day on a job was when I helped an old couple set tobacco.

 

Never again.

Other than being a real Kentuckian and doing farmwork I don't think I've had a bad job. I guess that is the eternal optimist in me but I believe that I've been lucky to have each job that I've had. Any job is bad at times, but I've worked with some great people.

I cleaned Riverbend Music Center the summer b/n my junior and senior year in high school. Anyone here ever cleaned 9 huge bathrooms after major concerts??? I can't unsee a lot of what was witnessed the "mornings after." Those memories haunt my dreams to this day.

I spiked tobacco for 4 (the time is approximate) hours while in college. I was a poor college student who needed the money. I was supposed to work the entire weekend at it, but I decided that starving to death was more of an attractive option.

Absolute worse job I ever had was cleaning the old sewage treatment (Rt 8 in Bromley) tanks that were later turned into holding tanks for catfish. We didn't know what it was. Thought it was mud! NASTY!! Really explains a lot. Hahahaha!

I've never really had what I would consider a bad job. I've had jobs I didn't like though. I worked as a valet at a few different places, and I hated it. Liked the money and some of the people I worked with, but hated the job.

OK...it wasn't a paying gig, but I thought of another one:

 

One year in South Louisville the sewers backed up into everyone's basement. In our particular house, it backed up almost to the first floor. My mom always canned/froze food during the summer to get us through the winter. Well, we had to remove EVERYTHING from the basement, scrub the walls, floor and every single item that was salvageable with bleach water, followed by that super-concentrated Lysol. Everything we removed that could be saved was taken to the backyard to be scrubbed with the same. I sat in the sun for 2 weeks that summer...my job was to scrub all the canning jars and freezer containers and their lids. I had a terrible sunburn, raw hands, and to this day I can't stand the smell of a bandaid...that's what the Lysol smells like.

 

A piece of advice. If someone ever offers you a nip of Laphroaig Scotch - politely but firmly refuse.

I did it every year from the age of 11 until I graduated from Morehead.

When we housed toabacco we would feed our workhands a huge meal. Homemade rolls, Roast, potatoes, corn, beans, and homemade pies. We had no problem getting workhands..... We paid them good too.

Worked at a lab that made vaccines for chickens and turkeys. Once the chickens had been given the vaccine they would have to be watched for 30 days. After the test was over I had to kill them. I rung the necks of the chickens and I used a bull castrator to kill the turkeys. It broke their neck and killed them without any blood being being lost. I hated it more than anything.

Throwing hay bales has been my worst job. I have severe allergies so wearing a mask in high temperatures with humidity is no fun, especially when I continuously sneeze for 15 minutes at a time. Always makes me feel like I accomplished something at the end of the day, but that doesn't last very long.

I set tobacco for a few years when I was young(er). I didn't get paid for helping out the family but I gathered the fallen leaves after putting it up and was given the money from that. Haven't touched it since, I despise farm work.
