5 Best Holmes Bulldogs

The List: Gary Huhn ...

If anyone knows Holmes basketball, it's long-time team scorekeeper Gary Huhn. The 1962 Holmes grad has witnessed nearly every Bulldogs' game over the last four decades. Here is his list of the five best players in school history, in alphabetical order:

Dicky Beal

He was a point guard who could dunk the ball. They would throw him an alley-oop pass once a game. He was about 5-10 or 5-11. He was exciting on offense and he played great defense.

Danny Green

He was a 6-4 center. In those days, in the 1970s, you were a center at 6-4. They didn't go down state his senior year, but they made the regional finals. He was mean enough to get the ball away from anyone. He could intimidate anyone and nobody could intimidate him.

Jack Jennings

He led the state in scoring his senior year and almost single-handedly took us down to state. He was big but he could play point guard too and not too many people got in his way. He was actually a good 3-point shooter too.

Doug Schloemer

He was Mr. Basketball his senior year, the first one from Northern Kentucky. He was a good rebounder and he could shoot from anywhere on the court and he was an overall team leader.

John Wimzie

He was more of a power forward. He could rebound and score. He really controlled the boards. He was all-state as a senior.

:thumb: I agree with every one of Gary's picks. He would certainly be the expert I would turn to for this list.

I remember Beal and Jennings. Didn't Jennings go Western KY and play overseas in the early 90's?

Yes.

Hayes from Holmes in the early 90's would have to be in consideration. But its hard to argue with this.

Bingo Jennings had a nice career "on the hill" after spending a year (I think) at Sullivan in Louisville. Good guy -- still a force in the Deveroes' League.

Jennings still participates in the Deveroe's summer league and he did rather well this season. I believe he was the MVP of the tournament. I still remember him in those striped warmups, big backside on that boy. Still remember that attempted dunk vs Ballard at Freedom Hall, that thing almost hit the roof after snapping off of the rim.

Which one?

Which one?

Wasn't James the best basketball player?

James was better than LaMont but Chris was supposed to be the best of the bunch. He started off like a gang buster his first few seasons but I don't think he ever reached the level of his hype.

I'm going with Chris. If I had to pick a backcourt of the 90's. Mine would be Chris Hayes and Joe Harney.

Broke a kneecap playing football, I believe before his junior year and was never the same.

I knew something happened to him, big prospect as a frosh and soph.

A while ago, but Carl Simpson, a center from I believe, the mid-sixties era teams could fill it up, and had great hops for the times!!

Why was his nickname "BINGO"????????
