US Withdraws From Iraq

Featured Replies

American troops in Iraq are

, presumably before Christmas. A small contingent will remain to guard the US embassy and other small tasks. This is quite a bit different than declaring the official end of combat operations, in that combat operations are officially ending and US troops will be out of there. This appears to be both the desire of the US and the Iraqi government, as they apparently thwarted the idea of any other lingering troops. However, the State Department will oversee about 5,000 private mercenaries who will continue operations there. I'm not sure how much difference that makes, how long private contractors will remain there, or what their mission will be. At least for now it appears the US has finally reached a milestone in ending the war in Iraq.

Yes, he undoubtedly deserves credit as well as the consequences that may come later.

Never should have been there in the first place.

Glad we're getting out.

You mean the consequences that come from being there in the first place? The same place he voted against invading in the first place? Uhhh.....sure....

Doesn't matter, if we pull out and leave things unstable, it's on him. The good goes with the bad and vice versa.
So can Obama receive credit for this?
Glad were getting out, don't care what happens there after we leave. Wich it would have come sooner.

You and me both.

The Iraqi government seems to think they are stable enough. It's time to take the training wheels off the bike and let them ride like all the other big kids do. I wish them well.

I do too, but it's still a fact that he (Obama) will take criticism if things go bad. Just the way it works.

Him voting not to go there has nothing to do with the situation at hand.

I'm glad we are out but there will be consequences, that's a fact. You cannot deny having Americans out of Iraq makes it a weaker country. There may be deals made with other gov'ts such as Iran and Turkey. Iran and Iraq may eventually go to another war with one another. Ahmadinjed has been making his number one priority to get us out of there. I think that there are two scenarios. Iran and Iraq make peace but at what cost? Will this mean heavy Iranian influence? Or they won't make peace and be back to fighting border wars again. Either way, it won't be pretty.

It's a tough call. Not sure where I stand on this, but it is a tough call. One that has to be made at some point.

Most likely no, but at some point we have to quit holding their hand and let them grow on their own. We can always go back if things get out of hand.

Rarely posting on this Forum - this is a subject that is close to my heart.

Having done multiple tours in Iraq with the Navy (specifically working Civil Affairs), the Iraqi's are an industrious and energetic people who will make every effort to stand on thier own feet and becoming truly an independant nation. While I have litterally bleed in that country for what I believe was a good reason, it is time for us to go and let the good people of Iraq stand united in the Freedom that they have been given by the 9 yrs of liberation.

Looking back at this point of my career and knowing that another deployment (Afghanistan) is looming in the distance, I do not in any way want to see the lives, efforts, resources, and suffering of the warriors amazing work collapse in front of our eyes. I believe the interest in keeping terrorist elements and the Iraninian influences are well worth keeping a close eye on for possible return if/when things go bad. We have been training them for the last 4 yrs. They are ready to stand on thier own.

Final note: I don't believe this move is somekind of savior move by our countries leadership. This is something that has long been programmed, and is only used for re-election possibilities. I think this needs to be remember and kept in mind when voting in 2012.
