Ah sorry Porky....meant other kids in other sports...just saw something from there showing soccer kids, football players, etc. Cupp is the only softball player from No. Ky that has signed with Union that I know of. I am certain others would be capable of playing for the NAIA school in Barbourville.

On a side note one of the great thrills for NKY players in the 70s and early 80s was to have Dale say your name during a WHKK broadcast.

They made Hollingsworth a very nice offer but she choose AU instead. She really liked the school and coaches there. UC is working the area hard.

Couple questions for you, Radford does not play Division 1 football and football usually foots the bill for all other sports, where are they getting the money to give "full rides"? Is the travel schedule you mention a requirement to play D-1 softball? I would have to think that many girls would be eliminated just for cost alone.

Are you sure about that bc I am 100% sure Moran has a full athletic ride to Radford. She also had nourmous really nice offers from other schools at or close to a 100%.

 

Can't control what the high school team does. But can in travel, this summmer and fall she will play in Premier Nationals in Huntingon Beach CA, in Bolder CO, Chicago several times, Disney, Mississippi and Indy and that is just to name a few. All and by the way she hit over .400 in travel.

 

Not sure but I think that is a little bit better than some HS tourney in the western part of the state. Also Ky produces a couple good players though out the state but there is not a lot of good teams anywhere in the state. And yes the western part of the state is better than NKY.

 

Does Walton play some great schedule every year? When you break it down I am sure its about the same. I am not knocking WV at all, I would love to have my daughter on a HS team like that but not every school cares about softball.

I don't mean to butt in on your conversation but I can tell you as you mention, softball does not have a huge recruiting budget. So I guess it is not requirement you play travel ball to get a D1 scholarship, but I would say most do. Think about it, when a college coach can go to one tournament and see some of the best talent in country play in one place it would make more sense than to go to 1 high school game or high school tournament that has few players. You would have to be one phenomenal athlete to get noticed by D1 and at the very least, need to go to certain camps.

Most D1 football teams cost there schools money out side of the BCS schools. That is one of the reasons NKU did not get into the OVC, it would have given them an unfair advantge of not having to pay for football.

 

As far as how schools get there money I have no clue most not all D1 schools are fully funded and have 12 scholarships to divide up any way they choose. Radford must have enough money bc the first 2 weeks of the season this year they will be in Hawaii.

 

My guess is if you would receive money from a D1 school you would most likely have to play a fairly high level of travel ball. College softball coaches rarley attend a HS game but if you go to a high level travel ball tourney you may see upwards of 100 coaches there. Does not take a huge budget to get in your car and drive several hours to see 40 or 50 teams on a given weekend during the summer or the fall. For instance this summer and fall I saw coach Lawson from UK in Columbus, Chatt TN twice, Chicago twice and St Louis and she drove to all those places her self.

 

As far as travel cost, it is expensive but if you want to play you and your travel team will usually find a way to make it happen. My daughter's team pays for a lot incuilding the players rooms and meals so when I travel I usually share a room with 1 or 2 other dads to help reduce the cost.

 

One of the things I hear most is that schools don't have a lot of money to give out. In some cases that may be true in other cases that is what they want you to believe. Our org has around 40 girls that will alll play D1 softball and I would doubt any of our girls are recieving less than 75% athletic money, not counting what else they may receive.

Every kid is different and different things work out for different kids. My suggestion would be to play on the very best travel team you can even if you are not the star of the team there is a lot better chance of getting seen on a good team than being the star on an average team that no coaches come and watch. I have seen several times where a coach comes to one of our games to see a certain player and walks away wanting another player.

 

Camps are good I would do as many as you can. Remember this, in order to receive money from a BCS type school you need to be in the top 3 to 5% at a high level tourney. There is really no high level tourney played with in a 5 hour drive of NKY. So I would choose camps carefully. Everyone would love to play at UK or UL and for a lucky few they do, but most do not.
