December 20, 200520 yr Well in Jefferson County the true cost is more like the 8 or 9 thousand dollar number I quoted. Thats what you get if you divide the costs by the number of kids. I still wonder why if a school system is happily allowing one of their students to attend another school out of district and even transferring any "excess" funds not used by this student over to his/her new school, why don't they do that same thing when one of their students elects to attend a private school. Because state law does not allow them to transfer the funds to a private school but does allow them to transfer the funds to another public school. I assume you can understand the rationale behind the difference. If that's a problem for you, go try and change state law, but don't blame the public school administrators on this point.

Pretty large assumption, LN.
December 20, 200520 yr Pretty large assumption, LN. Nah, LSU Rock is a pretty level headed person based on his posts. He understands why public tax dollars cannot be diverted to private entities. If we continued down that road, who knows where we would end up. While I'd have no problem with my tax dollars going to a help pay a kid's tuition at T or X, I certainly understand why some other taxpayers could object to it. And while I certainly understand that there are some "questionable" uses of tax dollars already, one bad idea doesn't justify additional bad ideas.

How about trying a system that allows me to use some of my own tax dollars to educate my kids?
December 20, 200520 yr How about trying a system that allows me to use some of my own tax dollars to educate my kids? That system's set up, you choose not to use it. I don't have a problem with it, that's your perogative.
December 20, 200520 yr Two county schools out of how many counties in KY? I would estimate that they are about 118 couty schools. (Took out Jefferson and Fayette) I find it real hard to buy into the argument that 2 county schools are working hard and have good coaching while 116 do not. Actually 4 of the teams listed are a part of a county school system(Boyle, Male, Rockcastle & Bullitt East). Here is a list of other county schools and their winning pct. over the same period. Bell Co. - 73.7% Breathitt Co. - 79% Madison Central - 70% Mason Co. - 71.4% Scott Co. - 71.6% Trigg Co. - 77% Some independent school's winning pct. over the same period: Berea - 26.9% Dayton - 19.2% Jenkins - 9.6% Ludlow - 25.4% Pineville - 27.4%
December 20, 200520 yr How about trying a system that allows me to use some of my own tax dollars to educate my kids? If you extend that logic, no one should pay for any publicly-funded service they don't use. Hmmm. A la cart tax funding. What kind of road system would we have if we siphoned off a portion of federal highway funds to grant tax refunds to people who choose to walk or ride bicycles? And what would happen to state universities if they suddenly had to make due only with tax revenue from students? If I'm a vegetarian, I guess I shouldn't have to pay taxes for FDA livestock inspectors, huh? And if I never take vacations, why should I have to pay taxes to support the National Parks Service? I don't live next to a pollution source, so I don't know why I have to pay taxes for the EPA, either...
December 20, 200520 yr LSU, it is a tax. What other taxes do you pay that you get to directly decide how it gets used?

What you got there is a bona fide red herring. I'm not saying that I get to pay or not pay but I am responding to others posts about attending schools out of district and the reciprocal agreements those bodies enjoy. I think that should be extended to all. Afterall, aren't we all just trying to do whats best for the children.
December 20, 200520 yr LSU, it is a tax. What other taxes do you pay that you get to directly decide how it gets used? You get to have influence in a great many. If your representative doesn't do as you like you can organize to get him/her voted out. You also have a role in a great many "use" taxes. I'm speakng more for a tax credit rather than an exemption.

You also have a role in a great many "use" taxes. I'm speakng more for a tax credit rather than an exemption. Hence the word directly in post. The answer is none. You do get to vote for who decides on how to spend those tax dollars but not what they are spent on. My argument is that you want your property taxes to be put toward improving the public schools in your area, because the second largest driver of the increase in the value of property is the quality of the local school district. In the last ten years, the amount of property taxes I have paid(and I live in maybe the highest property tax area in the state, we also have the best schools) pales in comparison to the increase in the value of my property. The largest driver of that increase is the local public schools. So you directly do benefit from those tax dollars, even though you don't feel like you are "directing" them toward your child's education.
December 20, 200520 yr It sure is odd that 3 of those teams have forfieted games over the last 10 years. But their public and that couldn't have anything to do with why they win they must just work hard.
December 20, 200520 yr No, I'll tell you what is odd. This is the 58th post to this thread and I think only 2 of them actually answer the question originally ask. This post is way off topic.

It's because it's the 58th post in the 198th thread started on the same issue. They all start to look the same after a while. Same people, same argument, same rebuttal.
