I'm not talking about Pujols. He's worth the money. I'm talking about some of the other enormous deals he gave to guys like JD Drew, Crawford, Dice-K, etc., etc....The Red Sox and Yankees had the resources to do it, so they overpay for guys to guarantee they get them. While Chicago has the money to compete, he won't be able to spend nearly as freely.

 

I don't think Pujols is worth $250M over 10 years. I agree, it will be interesting to see how he does on a smaller budget.

As a Red Sox fan, I'm obviously a big Theo fan. I'm surprised he's leaving and I hate to see him go. Obviously you never know, but I feel like there should be somebody under Theo ready and capable of stepping up and doing the job for Boston. I'm cautiously optimistic that the Sox can keep things going. The Moneyball secret has been out of the bag for a while, so it's not like Epstein has a leg up on anyone in that regard nowadays.

 

It's certainly a good move for Boston. I would think the possibility of bringing long awaited championships to two of the most star-crossed organizations in MLB history would be a huge draw for him. That would be quite a legacy as a GM if he can pull it off.

Theo did not build the Sox into contenders with the Moneyball strategy. He didn't have to. Unlike the A's who cannot afford to make mistakes the Sox can so Theo could chase the Carl Crawfords.

It's a good move. He's demonstrated that he can turn lots of money into lots of wins. Previous GMs at Wrigley have demonstrated that they can turn lots of money into decidedly fewer wins. As long as the Northsiders keep cranking out the checks, I think Epstein will have them, at the least, atop that division shortly.

The age is the only one I'd be terribly concerned about. The other two have been with CC for most of his career.

You are incorrect. If you remember correctly the 2004 Red Sox featured lightly regarded players with high OBP such as Kevin Millar, Mark Bellhorn and Bill Mueller in prominent roles. None of them were expensive free agent acquisitions. David Ortiz was also an afterthought to many and was not expensive.

 

In later years the payroll continued to rise but the 2004 team was not full of expensive free agents.
