I dont see it making a big difference. He had just as many bad contracts in Boston as Hendry did in Chicago. The Sox haven't developed a shortstop since Nomah. Like the Cubs, most of their rotation came via free agency.

 

Once the current bad contracts end and Epstein hires who he wants as a manager, he might have a chance to do something.

I'll be very surprised to see Quade back next year. Ryno is willing to come back to the organization now that Jim Henry is gone. I'd like to see him as a bench coach for a few years before taking over.

I like him already! Probably be Francona or Ryno at the helm next year..

I doubt Theo would bring Francona back in....The Phillies have given St. Louis permission to discuss their manager's job with Ryno.

Sandberg has no major league coaching experience. Who was the last manager with no MLB coaching/managing experience to lead his team to the playoffs? Who was the last Hall of Fame player to lead the organization he played for to the playoffs?

 

Smart move by Epstein. If he hires Sandberg and he flops, then what? How hard would it be for Epstein to fire Sandberg mid-season?

 

They rewarded loyalty when they hired Quade last year. That didn't end well. Epstein realizes the Cubs aren't going to win next season or even 2013. Why throw the most beloved Cub into that?
