October 12, 201114 yr I haven't seen a thread about this yet.....According to reports on Cubsworld.com. Theo Epstein has officially signed a 5 year deal with the Chicago Cubs. The deal is reportedly worth $15M. As a lifelong Cubs fan, I have been this excited since my first trip to Wrigley field back in 1987. There will be a renewed energy in Wrigley this coming season. He will have to bring a few starting pitchers and a couple of solid bats. I am not saying the Cubs will win the World Series next season, but things maybe turning the corner. If Epstein can end two of the greatest sports curses, he will be a H.O.F. GM for sure!!

October 12, 201114 yr Will be interesting. How will Theo react when the Cubs brass tell him "no" when he wants to go spend $250 MM on a guy? Don't get me wrong, Theo has been amazing in Beantown, but he's also had unlimited resources. While he'll still have more than most, there will be a ceiling.

However, I think the Chicago brass will be ok with spending $250M when it will bring Pujols in to play 1B. I do think Theo will either try and restructure Soriano's deal or try to ship him out to clear some money. I also hope that Marmol is traded, released, cut, whatever and they can try to pull in a quality closer.

While Chicago has the money to compete, he won't be able to spend nearly as freely. He was the GM who put together Boston's first World Series team together in the early 2000's wasn't he? I don't remember them going out and getting every top free agent player for that year. So he has put together a team without doing that, and he also has put together using money to get the top players. So even if he doesn't have as much to play with, he has shown he can still put together a good team without it.
