NFL Week 4 Random Thoughts

HB20 would feel differently if it was DeSean Jackson haha!

He would've started a thread about how the league was trying to "cater" to the Dream Team, and they just did it to make Michael Vick happy after his comments last week.

It was in Arizona. I checked wikipedia.

I posted this on Facebook yesterday and it sparked conversation but why in the world is so much time devoted to breaking down the Cowboys and how they suck? They have sucked for a long time. They don't devote this time to the Bengals and their suckiness. Why do we have to go through the over analysis of Dallas? They haven't been great since the 90's.

The Giants didn't get a huge break from the officials. The rule states the following,

Cruz obviously made no attempt to advance after he went to the ground. It's not like he lost the ball going to the ground. He gave himself up, set the ball down and began running back to the huddle to keep the offense moving.

The NFL's V.P. of Officiating Agrees and says the Refs got it right.

Is this a new rule?

I remember when Plaxico Burress spiked the ball after a catch after going down untouched. Result.....fumble.

I remember Desean Jackson flipping the ball before crossing the plane. Result......fumble.

Marvin Harrison makes a reception and gives himself up on the play....no one touches him so he gets up and takes off running. Result....touchdown.

There are many, many, many more instances of guys dropping the ball and not trying to advance it yet it was still a fumble or in Marvin's case...a touchdown.

Horrible call by the refs and horrible of the NFL to agree. Another case of consistency needed from the officials.

I said the same thing. Do they really need to spend 20-25 minutes on that game?

I have to agree with you about Ronnie Brown's decision, that was absurd.

Of course the league office agrees. I haven't heard anyone other than them and some Giants fans try to say it was the right call. Even Eli said the Giants got a break.

In honor of the ESPN crew...come on man!

Did you read a different rule than the one I posted? Did it not look like Cruz had given himself up and decided to go back to the huddle? The play was over. It's not like Arizona made a play and got ripped off.

You are bringing up plays from several years ago, and even then it's different situations. The refs had already blown this play dead. Therefore him laying the ball on the ground and Arizona recovering it meant nothing. The play was over...

Yeah, I've started so many of those lately.

Desean doesn't do things like this. He just drops the ball during a celebration before he even reaches the end zone.

Let's see if someone can make a better argument other than:

  • It's halfback20 so of course he's going to side with the Giants.
  • If the Eagles did it HB20 wouldn't feel this way.
  • Come on Man.

Here's the rule again, for those who might have missed it.

Official shall declare ball dead ... when runner declares himself down by falling to ground or kneeling & making no effort to advance

Its basically the same thing as a quarterback taking a knee, right HB20? The only difference being that it is so open on the field everyone can see it. At first blush it was obviously a fumble, but upon further thought it made sense why it isn't a fumble.

Its a difference situation when Receiver A catches a pass, stands up and twirls the ball on the ground in celebration, then realizes he wasn't touched down. By standing up, he continues himself in the play, whereas the Giants receivers didn't do that.

Essentially, yes it's like a QB or any other player taking a knee. People may not agree with the rule, but it's still the rule. I think it was intended for QB's that were sliding to take themselves out of a play, but essentially that's what Cruz did. He took himself out of the play, and then started back to the huddle to keep the offense moving.

I guess you could say Cruz wins this one based upon a technicality. Let us be honest here. Cruz stumbles and falls to the ground thinking he was tackled and down and fumbles the ball. By rule also, if a defender does not touch a player the ground cannot cause a fumble. If Cruz was really "declaring himself down", then why did he attempt to go after the ball when the defenders jumped on it? He had no idea of what had transpired. The rule was put in place for defenseless players, not for players that have brain lapses. For now on if a guy fumbles without being hit, they should just take off back to the huddle... that is essentially how this has played out. Not the intent of the rule.

I believe it was Eric Mangini on NFL32 who made a pretty solid argument on why it should have been ruled a fumble.

As for the play being dead, I could be wrong, but I don't believe the refs blew their whistles before Victor Cruz let go of the ball either.

Either way, by way the of the rule, it shouldn't be a fumble. However, its been ruled a fumble in so many other situations that it makes this play look wrong. And I will say that I like that they didn't rule it a fumble (even though it benefited the Giants). There is just a lot of grey zone because of past plays and I can see this becoming a constant issue unless they make it black or white.
