I guess you could say Cruz wins this one based upon a technicality. Let us be honest here. Cruz stumbles and falls to the ground thinking he was tackled and down and fumbles the ball. By rule also, if a defender does not touch a player the ground cannot cause a fumble. If Cruz was really "declaring himself down", then why did he attempt to go after the ball when the defenders jumped on it? He had no idea of what had transpired. The rule was put in place for defenseless players, not for players that have brain lapses. For now on if a guy fumbles without being hit, they should just take off back to the huddle... that is essentially how this has played out. Not the intent of the rule.

 

In an interview of Cruz on PTI I believe, and I will only be paraphrazing, he said that he thought he was touched down. He was going down to not get hit and he thought he was touched so he gave up the ball. After he stood up and saw the opposing players going after the ball he did as well (naturally in my mind). He said he had a really sick feeling in his stomach and thought he just made a huge mistake (can't blame him).

 

So he did give himself up and go to the ground, he did think he was touched...and you could probably say if he realized he wasn't, he would have stood up and gone for more yards, if possibile.

If I had to guess it would be because they all thought someone else had touched him making him down. They all went for the ball though once they realized no one touched him though, right? Even Cruz thought he was touched down.

 

I didn't know the play was ruled dead. I thought they just gave him the ball back. I do think it's funny the only person in the stadium and watching on tv that knew the rule was the ref.

Cruz also said that he gave himself up and was ready for the next play, which was quite obvious by his actions (making no effort to advance, and returning to the huddle). If he gave himself up and was not trying to advance, and the refs called it that way, where's the problem? You might not like the call, but according to the rules the right call was made. It doesn't matter if he thought he was down or not. And everyone is all upset about a play that the Cardinals didn't even make. If it had went their way it would have simply been a lucky break for them. They lost because of poor clock management, poor play calling and poor defense in the 4th quarter...not because of one correct call by the officials.

I was joking about the hurt feelings, however being that it's only words, I can see how you would think otherwise. It was intended to be a joke though because I'm almost certain you don't care whether or not you hurt my feelings :lol:.

I believe Cruz said he meant to go down. And to me it looks like he meant to go down. He looked to his right and saw the Arizona defenders on both sides and then went to the ground. It doesnt look like he tripped at all.

He may have meant to go down. I just remember him saying he thought he had been touched. Makes me wonder if he would have reacted differently had he known he hadn't been touched. I see what you are saying. I just wonder what his entire thought process was during that moment. Especially since his whole team thought he had just made a major mistake. Even he thought he messed up.

 

I wonder when the next time something like this may happen.
