A dish is small and round. Cable is very long and quite thin.

Any particular reasons? Is the HD better or would you say it's the same?

 

I like the set up better with Direct TV and it's more suited toward sports. They give bonus coverage of golf majors that is really cool that is completely free... I think the HD is about the same, to my understanding DTV had more HD, but I could be wrong.

Reading through this thread today because we're thinking of switching from Direct to Dish. As I stated earlier in the thread, we had Dish for eight years & then switched to Direct. Have some family & friends who use Dish & I think Direct is just better from a programming standpoint. But looking at the prices, it seems that Dish is significantly better.

 

My most recent gripe w/ Direct has been that we've been losing signal on our HD channels over the last week or so. I've called customer service numerous times & have figured out a way to temporarily fix the problem. I switch some cords in the back & the HD channels come back for a while, but it's not long before they go out again. So the Direct people tell me they need to get a technician out to our house to fix the problem & since I don't pay for the monthly protection plan, it's going to cost $50 for this.

 

Now, the $50 isn't a problem for us, but it's the principle of the matter. And while my wife often says I make mountains out of molehills, I'm not understanding why I have to pay for them to fix their equipment. If I'm staying at a hotel & the television remote goes bad or something, I don't have to pay for it to be replaced. If I rent a house from someone & something in the plumbing goes bad & it wasn't my fault, I don't have to pay for it to be fixed. So I'm not seeing why I should be expected to foot the bill for this.

 

In addition, Dish is now offering their "America's Top Everything" package (which is basically every channel on the planet) for $74.99 per month for the first year. Right now we're paying something like $105 per month for Direct.

Not sure, but that's not something I'm interested in. Right now, I get a $12 sports package through Direct & also the NBA League Pass (or whatever it's called).

Directv has Sunday Ticket (which doesn't interest me). BUT. Dish getting ready to have a dispute with AMC over prices, and will lose AMC by the end of the month. So I'm holding off. As far as HD is concerned, both are about the same in terms of channels. It did concern me that Dish did not have ESPNU, or ABC Family, or the Disney Channels in HD. But they do have some channels direct doesnt' have in HD (BBC America comes to mind, and Discovery Kids, History Channel 2). I've got a spreadsheet that lists HD Channels with each, pm me with an email if you're anal about stuff like that, like me. I can send you a copy.

You can't get Sunday Ticket with Dish but you can get the Red Zone.

I went with Direct and like it much better than what I had before. We'll see how that stands after my second year, which starts in October.

Appreciate the info! I wasn't aware of the AMC dispute, nor ESPNU being without HD. We're for sure sticking with Direct for another month. Not sure beyond that.

I've had both, but I stuck with Directv when Dish lost the MLB Extra Innings package, and didn't carry the MLB Network. Now that I have the MLB TV through the internet, and Dish has the MLB channel, I could go back. I'm going to wait a few more months and see what happens with some of the programming.

I've never had Dish....I went with DirecTV because of the sports, mainly the NFL Sunday Ticket. I've had it about three years now and have been pleased with the programming, but their customer service is the worst I've ever seen. I've discovered overbilling on multiple occasions and it was an absolute nightmare to get it resolved.

Trying to talk the wife into getting Direct TV over cable. Mainly I want It because right now you get NFL Sunday Ticket for free. Plus I don't want Dish because if they get rid of AMC that means no Walking Dead.

I have to think Dish & AMC will work something out. I'm keeping my eye on the situation, because we're thinking of switching back to Dish. Having had both Dish & Direct, I feel like Direct is better overall. Pricing is where Dish has them beat though.
