Not even close. A couple things. 1. Birds are getting better. 2. Western is not on the same level as Boyle. Not even close. With all things considered with Western being touted as the "best in the west", who ever comes out of the East is hands down the Favorite to win State. No doubt!

When I arrived at DCMS , I knew something wasn't right. Western is supposed to be a state title contender and when I looked on the visitors side of the stadium , there were about 20 people there , that's it. I kept looking at the gate for a large group of their fans , you know , like they would come by bus , but it didn't happen.

 

I was glad to see a large crowd of Bird fans , even the student section was full. What's up with the cowboy hats ?

Every home game has a theme. Last week was blackout, this week western.

I have to say one thing about the Western fans who were there last night. Before the game, members of previous HHS state championship teams were introduced. The Western fans applauded along with our fans. At the end, when Homer Rice was introduced and our fans all stood -- many of their fans stood as well.

I was watching not only their fans but some of their staff on the sidelines and guys that hold the balls, etc....Each time Highlands would make a freak play I would look at their expressions and they were like...."wow...did you see that?" They were very impressed to say the least as they should have been.

Yes, I got the feeling they left with a deep respect for the program that the community has built.

You have to understand the Western demographics to understand why they don't travel as well as you'd like to expect.

 

Western looks to be following the Central example in improving their program. They've played Male and Eastern, taken on Highlands....they take on Ballard next. They're trying to play the best competition they can. I say watch them....Coach Boyd is building something over at Wester.

I thought Western played hard all the way through the last snap. Which is a huge credit to the coaching staff. They have a bright future. Unfortunately for them,, the birds played their best game of the year.

Cool. I guess we see different games. I have been watching games for a lomg time and rarely have seen cheapshots. I see frustration and jawing Nd even the occasional fighting. Cheapshots? Rarely.
