August 31, 201115 yr An interesting little tidbit, Gibson Guitar CEO Henry Juszkiewicz is a Republican donor and Chris Martin IV, the CEO of Gibson competitor, C.F. Martin and Company, is a long-time donor to Democrats. C.F. Martin uses the same Indian rosewood in its guitars and has experienced no federal raids. Hmmmm. The Gibson Guitar saga gets steadily curiouser If true, it sure makes Washington look Chicago style.

August 31, 201115 yr Right. This should make it clear to you that more are re-entering. Not a good thing. But still, they're re-entering and then being caught and prosecuted for re-entering. I'm not sure how you can deny that from th article you posted. Frankly, if they're re-entering and being caught, it's the only way we have the statistics. How many under other administrations were deported and re-entered without being caught and prosecuted? It's impossible to know.

The Gibson Guitar saga gets steadily curiouser If true, it sure makes Washington look Chicago style. I'm not ready to buy that just yet. Juszkiewicz donated to Huckabee in 2007 and that's been the extent of his donating efforts. That's almost non-existent. There are literally thousands of more people and executives who are far more active and prolific donators whose companies haven't been hassled. If Martin's donating to Democrats (he donated to Obama and the DNC in 2008) is buying him protection, then why have Taylor guitars - Martin's biggest competitor and more substantial user of Indian rosewood - been left unscathed? Takamine guitars are more of a competitor than Gibson and are able to be easily shipped into the US. And those certainly aren't the only rosewood manufacturers. Unless there's a lot more information that hasn't come out, I don't see enough evidence to conclude Gibson guitars are being unnecessarily harassed because of a Huckabee donation four years ago.

Like I said, now or in the past, a revolving door does no good.

China is a much bigger offender than the US, 95% of the wood is going to China, but we're talking about US companies here. Takamine isn't an American company, is it?
August 31, 201115 yr In my head I hear John McLaughlin's voice saying that! Nice old-school reference.

Takamine isn't an American company, is it? It doesn't appear Taylor's executives donate to anyone. Takamine is Japanese. The WSJ article said that international movement of these guitars is tedious and difficult, but Takamine apparently does it regularly despite being a competitor to Martin.

August 31, 201115 yr Gibson CEO responds to raid... Mrs. Obama guilty of violating law also... Interesting.. I'm quite sure that the first lady will not be investigated...

Question is why? As said in the video, if Gibson is committing a criminal act, then technically, so did Michelle Obama. Only the government with their overreaching bureaucratic abuse can create such a mess.

As said in the video, if Gibson is committing a criminal act, then technically, so did Michelle Obama. Only the government with their overreaching bureaucratic abuse can create such a mess. I consider myself a conservative with moderate tendencies - including a soft spot for numerous environmental issues. It might also be of note that I am definitely not a fan of Barry or Michelle Obama. That being said, I think there are a lot of things that remain to be seen in this story as it develops before any real conclusions can be drawn. Some questions that I would ask are: If Gibson is being singled out (which I think it is), is it possible that the government knows something or is looking for something that they have not yet disclosed? Is it possible that Gibson is not being completely forthcoming about everything they're being raided and investigated for? If you look back, Michelle Obama gifted the Gibson Hummingbird to France's first lady in April 2009, and the first raid at the Gibson factories wasn't until November 2009...seven months later. Isn't it possible that the investigation hadn't been started at the time Michelle Obama visited France?

August 7, 201214 yr Gibson Guitar acknowledges exotic wood violation - Businessweek NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Federal prosecutors on Monday announced a deal to drop a criminal case against Gibson Guitar Corp. after the instrument maker acknowledged its importations of exotic wood violated environmental laws. Nashville-based Gibson agreed to pay a $300,000 penalty, forfeit claims to about $262,000 worth of wood seized by federal agents and contribute $50,000 to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation to promote the conservation of protected tree species.
