A 14pt victory was not what I expected from Mayfield?

I don't think the game was nearly as close as the score. That said, the qb experiment killed a lot of drives. But all that said, we still made several turnovers, several deep in Gwood territory and missed a field goal. We were also content with just pounding the ball right at them the entire 4th quarter. I'm not sure we threw a single pass after the halfway point of the 3rd when it was obvious that the Gwood defense was worn down and was having problems stopping us from running straight at them. Same thing we did at Gwood when we had them worn down last in the 4th quarter.

Unlike last year though, we have a new sophomore qb and he forced some stuff and it cost us. He looked better in the Milan scrimmage, because he made better decisions and that should improve as the season goes on. We are obviously a work in progress on offense, as we thought we would be early.

The end of the qb experiment will help, as the other qb is not bringing any production. Of course, this is just my opinion and the coaches may see beyond the trees blocking my view. Had we left Guhy in, we likely would have had more points last night. On the plus side, Gwoods line was huge and our little line on both sides surprised all, by winning both sides of the line of scrimmage -- something that was a huge pleasant surprise. But the pass blocking needs a little improvement. I am pleased with the lines progress and that will be a huge plus as the season rolls on. Our defense is already special which will carry us a long way.

2 ints, 2 lost fumbles, a missed extra pt and a missed fg didn't help. The 2 fumbles were in the red zone and one of the pics was inside Gwoods 35 yd line, so, yeah, they should have scored some more points, but, it's early in the year and they have time to correct these things. I agree that Guhy needs to be the f/t qb over Hughes. Hughes may be the better athlete and gives you a little more with his legs, but, not near as effective running the offense or on the timing of his passes. I think its a waste to have a kid like him on the team and not find a spot somewhere that he can play. I think he'd make a heck of a WR, safety or even a solid linebacker, but, doesnt need to be behind center.

I was very impressed with the Cardinals defense. Quick linemen, LBs pursue extremely well, quick in the secondary, fundamentally sound tacklers, several kids that are solid backups and a great speed rusher in Scott from the DE position. That defense will carry them a long ways this year and keep them in alot of games till the offense starts jelling.

Greenwood would be a top 3 program in 1A. But they are 5A. The game was on the road and we were not sharp. This team will only get better and 1A teams will seem like cupcakes. I still say Mayfield is the team to beat in 1A. Beechwood and all the other1A schools will have an extremely tough time scoring on them.
