College athletes being paid

Featured Replies

I couldn't find anything on this if it a repeat thread the mods can delete it. I was wondering what people's thoughts are with college athletes being paid. Personally I am against it because I think them receiving college scholarships and the chance to advertise themself (playing on tv and things like that) for the next level is more than fair. Now I am only speaking of DI players. Just wanted to see what other people thought about this matter.

I don't think it's fair that the university and the NCAA exploits them and makes a killing and in comparison they get peanuts in return. Don't give me the free college education crap either because we all know darn well the top 10% aren't going to any college for school. They are going because they have to go get to the NFL or NBA.

I’m not totally against it if a plan was development that was fair and didn’t give schools an unfair recruiting advantage. The problem is I don’t think that is possible. I’ve also heard that Title IX would prevent paying football players and not paying other sports. What about the smaller D1 schools that don’t make a profit from football or use what they do get from their conference to offset their other sports? Do you pay different players on the same team differently based on position or talent? It’s a very complicated issue with no easy answers IMO.

Not that I am for this, but I got to thinking about it the other day... what if your recruitment was strictly based on the free-market system? How much more competitive or less would it make collegiate athletics? I do not believe it would change as much as people would have you think.

Kids are exploited in the name of "student-athletics". One of the biggest shams in America today. I would first start by allowing kids to profit off of themselves. If Andrew Luck is able to make $5,000 off an autograph session, what is the harm in it? If you are an art student at a University on a full ride scholarship, nothing prohibits you from selling your work. Secondly, egregious violations and administration (Presidents, Provosts, etc.) start to get fired. Not just the head coach who can land on their feet.

I don't think they should be paid by the schools but I do think scholarships should include more living expense money. I also like the idea of the athletes profitting off of themselves like bugatti mentions. I think if the NCAA or University sells a jersey with the kids name on it they should get a percentage of that money.

I'm all for players being able to make money in college. Jerseys should have names on them & players should make a percentage of that. I don't buy the "that wouldn't be fair argument" in that situation or if they had autograph sessions, etc. Small school guys get love too. Bad programs get love too. 4 years ago no one could have predicted Andrew Luck or Jimmer Fredette would be as big of stars as they are. It would be a fair system, since players really cannot go out and get jobs. Would cut out alot of the cheating IMO.

Paying players will not prevent situations like Miami finds itself in. It will only raise the stakes.

Some interesting points where brought up. I agree with bugatti mentioning that if they did a autograph signing they could reap benefits of that. But I still say that the scholarship is quite a bit and I think that is enough. Sure if they elect to leave the

school early to enter the draft that is their choice. Just wanted to see what other people would think.

I am 100% against college athletes getting paid. Keep in mind, it's only a very select few that could be counted as revenue earners, the rest are simply getting their free education and going on. If a college kid on scholly needs $, then take out student loans, or work in the off-season. That's what I did.

At one time I would agree. But the value of an athletic scholarship compared to the demands and over exploitation that now exists of these athletes has not equaled.

I agree that if an athlete’s name or autograph is on something that they should receive a percentage of the profit. Additionally, if a player physically owns a piece of memorabilia and wants to sell it they should be allowed within reason. However, I can see these examples being abused and possibly providing a loop hole for scum bags like Shapiro. Who determines the value of such memorabilia? If players were allowed to sell their jerseys for example what would stop a booster from telling a recruit “you come to my school and I’ll buy a jersey every month for 5K”?

If they are on scholarship that pays for their classes, housing, and food I don’t think they can take out a student loan for cars and prostitutes? :D

College kids should be able to make money on use of their likeness...just like you and I could. They should be able to get a portion of their jersey sales, and autograph signings. If they want to sell their rings...they should have to pay back the school the value of the ring and keep the difference. Why can't they have the same benefits of a kid that is on academic scholarship?

Think about all of the gray area involved....who would be able to put the cap on the amount that a signed ball is worth? What if RJ Corman wanted to pay John Wall $25,000 for a jersey? You see what I am saying? The ONLY way if could work is if it was regulated, and they were paid hourly while performing basketball activities.
