I would think relative as you can't evaluate in a vacuum. .2% growth is huge when country is experiencing .1% loss.

2.8% job growth to .2% job growth. No harm?

I think the original author of the numbers has provided a correction that indicates growth was 1.0% annual and very, very health compared to the rest of the country.

I am not sure if Perry is the guy yet. But he is a governor and to me that is a big advantage over people who have only been legislators.

Around half of the newly created jobs in America come from Texas. Pretty legit.

Now that the Governor has officially thrown that hat into the ring we're going to start hearing a lot about the TX economy. I googled "rick perry texas economy" and found that not everyone thinks he is the man - no surprise there. Interesting points laid out:

 

1987-2001: TX jobs grew at 2.8% which is 0.8% higher than the US economy.

Since Mr. Perry became governor: 0.2% growth vs -0.1% overall.

 

A couple of ways to look at that:

 

Job growth has slowed down since the Gov took over.

Job growth has tripled as compared to the US economy.

 

I would think many governors could do well in TX considering they are in the south ie people move there for the weather. It's a huge energy state. It has millions of people coming into TX from Mexico . Add in conservative banking policies as well. Cheap labor and relatively cheap housing draw workers and young families.

A pretty fair analysis of the facts. You can be sure Perry's going to ride that Texas economy horse throughout the duration of his campaign, and I don't blame him one bit. But for the reasons you explained, I'm not so sure how much credit is due him. I don't want to take anything away from him, but neither do I want to shower upon him unwarranted praise.

I was first put off by Gov Perry when he started playing to the worst of people in TX and talked about seceding.

 

I didn't appreciate his comment about wanting to make sure the military has a President they respect. I have no patience for anyone who doesn't show respect to the current sitting President.

 

He also plays way too far to the radical religious side. Candidate Obama had his issues with his relationship with Rev. Wright and Perry goes way past that on the religious scale.

 

We'll see. We'll learn a lot more about him, good and bad, now that he says he's in.

 

He also has this odd, quirky thing about touching people's faces. I saw him do it a couple of times the other day to reporters. Heck, he did iit to my brother in Austin a few years back. My brother had a really thick beard and the Gov just reached out and touched it while talking to him. He's just different.
