I have taken my kids off the field due to lightning that was ignored by everyone else and I have told a youth coach how it was gonna be regarding heat and water breaks. He told me he was trying to toughen the boys up (age 9-10). I told him he was going to kill them and that if the high school didn't practice my son wouldn't be there and he would have water whenever he wanted it. My kids were extremely embarrassed but parents have got to step up and protect their kids.

 

Very well done and you are absolutely correct about the parents needing to protect their kids.

 

Toughen up 9-10 year old kids? Brother. Who ever runs the league this guy coaches in better get a handle on him quick. Right, wrong or otherwise, there are plenty of plaintiff's lawyers that will sue their pants off (and the coach's) if a kid gets hurt, or worse dies, because of such knuckleheaded behavior.

Sutton, I have three sons that have played/play sports. In my years we have met some real great coaches, and we have also met many that has no business coaching anything. I'm not a shy person, and when comes to my kids, I watch things very close.

If this were a high school team, the coaches would no doubt be in trouble. Hopefully that's the case here.

Too much emphasis is placed on winning in youth sports. This is a perfect example.

Maybe we should just give the kids a salt pill and a thimble of water on those hot days (NOT). There should be some way to implement guidelines for youth sports that carry consequences without hindering a coaches ability to coach. I think some coaches lose track of the idea that youth sports are suppose to be "FUN", along with the character building aspects that comes with playing a team sport. Learning how to win is important, learning to grow and improve from a loss is as well important.

Kids in this age range have a hard enough time paying attention. You can't possibly get the most out of these kids when they have the addition of full pads on a hot day. Not only dangerous but also most likely unproductive.

Pretty dumb on the coaches AND parents parts.
