What about the young Waldenmeyer boy? Heard he was the JV running backs favotite lineman. Looks like his diligence in the weight room has paid off...looked about 6'3/270 ?? Will he see the field this year on Fridays?

 

270?? Man he must have packed in on in the last 4 months. He sure looked like he had a great frame for OT.

270 was a guess-timate. Agreed that his frame is fit for either side of he line...and he does have the monkey-long arms that O-line coaches like. Heard he raised a few eyebrows at Louisville's mini camp recently. If the Bird's line gels, KATIE BAR THE DOOR!!

How will the Birds kicking game measure up to the past several years?

I am not "in the know" but I remember Gabe Schultz kicking the ball pretty deep last year in JV games. As far as field goal accuracy I am very curious myself. IMO every school should comb the soccer rosters and entice them to come out and kick. Weinel will definitely be missed. He was automatic.

This year's team may have the deepest receiving corp the Birds have had in many many years.

 

Ozzie Sheehan, Donovan McCoy, David Christian, Luke Turner, Jac Collinsworth.

 

Sheehan is a burner who can get behind DB's quickly as we have seen, McCoy is awesome in open space and I can see him as a slot receiver, Christian just finds ways to score (18TD's at JV level last year as soph), Turner is a tough receiver with good hands who is not afraid to go across the middle and Collinsworth may be the fastest kid on the team from what I hear. He has nice height (6'2 and lanky like Dad) and runs like a deer with his long strides.

Speaks volumes? Really? How so? To me it simply says that people don't know. Adam had it to another level so my guess is that it will be about where it was a couple years ago. Before Adam people never really talked about the kicking game.

Why else would it be quiet? Do you think they'll talk about offense, defense, running game, passing game, coaching, etc and NOT talk about the kicking game??? Sure, big conspiracy going on about the kicking game.

No conspiracy theories here. Just wondering about the strength of a vital part of the game from Highlands perspective. They haven't had to worry about this aspect of the game for awhile now and it will be interesting to see how things turn out in '11 especially if they aren't putting balls in the endzone on a consistent basis.

Ask and you shall receive boys. The kicking game for Highlands has been imo as good as a 7pt advantage in most games. Highlands kickers in the last 10 yrs or so has been the 12th man on defense, record setting touchbacks, pats, etc. Not all great D1 talent but pretty darn good. Yes, there could be some concern about the next in line after the stellar career of Adam Weinel (Valpo). There is a kid that Dale and others have had their eye over the spring and he has never played HS football before. I believe he played FTJLF and he is an outstanding Soccer player for the Birds. Pretty sure the kid has been asked to kick on Friday nites and play soccer during the week, Highlands has done this before with success.

This is interesting to say the least. Dale knew he was losing Weinel last year. Looking for a kicker in the spring seems a wee bit disconcerting for the Birds. Not to mention putting a kid in crucial game situations ( i.e. Elder at The Pit) who hasn't played since he was, well, a kid. I'm sure the Birds will be fine but as you said Sweeperboy, the Birds kicking game has been invaluable the past few years and will be crucial against teams like the Panthers.

Maybe they will bring in another Super Bowl player to coach in Jimmy Breech.
