CJ story on 5 Catholics in the finals

Featured Replies

JC, the answer is 41.67%.

Now, do I win a prize, or what?

No I just think that it is ridiculous of people (private supporters) to ride the man cause he made a mistake in his article of putting .01% instead of 1.45%. I mean the real % that needs to be addressed is the 41% of privates making it to the state finals. You can bash the man for making a small mistake but the fact is 5 out of 12 privates made it to the state finals this year and instead of looking at 1.45% so hard maybe we should look at the 41% a little more closely.

Great Post.......

Thanks :thumb:

This writer seems to want quotas. Since he works for a very liberal newspaper he probably gets points at work for this pathetic article. Quotas are popular with liberals since they neutralize hard work, dedication and spirit.

Another saying comes to mind - figures lie and liers figure. To use the make up of the finalist as backup to an pitiful argument is ignoring human dedication and spirit. John Hardin and Henry Clay could have easily been the finalist in 4A. A successful 2 pt PAT by JH and less fumbles by HC blow this whole article away. But the writer choose to ignore the human elements of competition and the human spirit and courage of the kids of these 2 public schools.

This numbers game is stupid. With this logic, the schools of the state of Kentucky should not have 10 NCAA basketball championships. Afterall, we are a very small state with few schools and we far exceed our quota on that fact....and certainly UCLA must have had some unfair advantage to win 10 straight championships. Lets not even talk about the Yankees.

Some teams, schools, programs will ALWAYS be better ON AVERAGE than others. But this is no reason to look for ways to cripple them.

The issue is that many people are looking at this statistic and assuming that the Catholic Schools are doing something wrong and what they ought to do is to ask what is it that the Catholic schools are doing right.

So you're telling me that just because they are private and just because they do "other" things that public schools don't is why they are better? That is ludicrous. Look at records of coaches before/after going to a private school to coach and you will see the difference. The fact is that private school students are a selective group. I'm not mentioning anything about recruiting but I am saying that the kids that go there are a selective blend.

I'm sure that if the private schools were doing something special then the other coaches around the state would pick up on it but the simple fact is that there is no difference in many cases.

Somerset High School draws their students from the small city of Somerset and that's it. Kids that live in the county can't even come to Somerset. County schools have boundaries. That is where the difference lies. I don't really like to post on this forum because it is always the same thing going around and around in circles, but I just couldn't let this one go :D

Then that is the countys fault not the private schools. You cant impose rules on yourself about not having open enrollment then get mad when other schools dont follow your rules.

Tell that to the good people of Danville and Boyle County. How in the world do they do it? For one thing, they work hard enough down there that parents don't have to think about whether to make their kids drive up to Lexington for High School (after all, it's not really all that far!). How does Highlands and Beechwood do it, they're an easy drive from some real football powerhouses (in Cincinnati)?

I don't quite know what to tell you. I wouldn't mind a constructive suggestion that involved some kind of a "handicap" for private schools ... maybe a formula that would add to their student population and make them play up a class (difficult for X and T in football though) ... maybe have a special limit for how long they get to practice in the Summer ... or refuse to play them so they have to look out-of-state for decent competition ... or have a separate playoff so that they don't have to face real competition.

But it really comes down to the fact that when people consistently lose to a more successful program they are tempted to make excuses, label that program as a "cheater", and seek to penalize it.

It's interesting to me that after KERA (Kentucky Education Reform Act) was enacted, we created our own Kentucky test and that made it more difficult to compare our students' performance with those of other states or with those in private schools. What has that really done for us? By the way, many would say that KERA was one of the best things to happen in KY for the private schools. Do you see anything familiar with this (ahem ... Prop 20)?

I agree with you in principle but I must say that the following could be said of all those situation.

1.Revoluntionary War - A bunch a rich guys didn't want to pay their taxes so instead of working things out they split from their homeland

Desert Storm- The US the richest nation in the world recruits from all the world to put together a force to defeat much weaker country

Iraq War 2- Worked before so we recruit some more allies and do it again.

Battle of the Bulge- American forces were defeated on all fronts except the surronded 101 Airborne who was able to hold on till Patton's third army and more recruits showed up.

D-Day- using overwhelming wealth of men and materials which where deceptively hidden and made to look like they were headed to Northern France, the Recruits from all over the allied world were able to defeat the Germans with overwhelming numbers and wealth. ;)

:p

Man, so when I was over in the Desert fighting for my life..and being outnumbered 2 to 1 by enemy soldiers ..I had nothing to worry about because of wealth???? If I had only known, It wouldn't have been near as stressful!

Ram95 seems to dislike those with wealth. Do you oppose the philosophy that those who work hard usually have and those who don't have not? Possibly you would be happier in Bangladesh. Personally, I'll stay here where hard work and dedication to task produces wealth as well as better football teams. Of course, we should all remember that wealth does not bring happiness. Family is what really matters.
You have never read many of my post have you?

And as a soldier you are subject to the difference in a tactical situation and a strategic situation. The U.S.A. was not going to lose that War, that doesn't mean that you weren't in harms way. Anyway I agree with you I am just pointing out that there are lots of ways to look at a situation.

Its a stratgeic move in the article to make Catholic Schools look bad on purpose.

I'm kind of proud of private schools. Kind of neat to know us Catholic people are in the minority but yet we still dominate everyone else in the state.

JC Alumni, when people don't like the obvious, they point to other points to distract from the obvious. So it makes perfect sense that the privates pick on the man's math.

I don't have a problem with privates because they don't impact eastern Kentucky one bit. But they do enjoy certain advantages, especially in football, that the public schools are not permitted to engage in.

And finally, congrats to Russell for proving that a good old eastern Kentucky school can take out a private!!!! :ylsuper: :ylsuper:

Everyone who won a state title this weekend should receive congrats! Being a public or private school shouldn't be the issue.
