At this time of year there is not much going on for the football junkies to talk about . We are doing everything we can to get our football fix. I'm sorry that you think this thread is meaningless , but it is what it is , and we are talking high school football on a high school football forum. Therefore , you can join the conversation in this thread or not , it doesn't matter either way. I think X's schedule is tougher but they are both fantastic schedules.

I hear ya. The one thing that is really starting to bug me though is this national ranking thing. Seems like we have two teams in the commonwealth that have fallen in love with it. That is a silly idea and fosters bad things to come for the high school game, not good things imo.

I think the national ranking thing was brought up by coach Mueller of Highlands in 08 , where they ended up ranked 3rd in the nation. Since then they have won three state titles. I'm assuming the other team your talking about is Trinity. I'm not sure but I think Trinity has won state two out of the last three years.( correct me if I'm wrong ).Between the two teams that you are talking about ,they have twenty state titles each. IMO the national ranking thing has not hurt either team in any way. It's a good thing to set your goals high , ever heard of the saying " aim for the stars............ " ? It doesn't look like anything bad has happened to either team yet. The way people are talking they may have their best teams ever.

HBF-I know you are a huge Highlands fan, and I agree with you to shoot for the highest goal possible. However, there is simply no way currently to determine who is the best high school team in the country-so it all becomes subjective, and if teams enter this "arms war" to acheive an unanswerable question I suspect it could lead to further corruption of the high school game. That is what I don't like. I have the utmost respect for Highlands and Trinity (although they should obviously play each other in the regular season), but am fearful that they along with handfuls of other teams in the country have decided they would like the glory of being ranked #1 in the country according to USA Today, So now counting the state championships aren't enough. Now civic pride isn't enough. Now whipping your neighbor down the road isn't enough. Now the greed and glory of this wannabe status is what it is all about. I just don't see a positive end game to this for the prepsters. The college game is corrupt enough...see USC, Ohio State and possibly Auburn as of late..I suppose I still hold to the old fashioned notion of high school sports being played for different reasons than where a club is ranked by a national newspaper.

I'm looking for the any discussion, recent or past, that Trinity has tried to present themselves as a contender for #1 in the nation, or a potential #1 in the nation. I haven't found any yet. Just others discussing it, and still others assuming that #1 in the nation is Trinity's intent. Haven't found it. If you want to assign the label of greed, please apply it correctly. Because it's not the Trinity folk making the claims.

I respect your opinion , but , the national ranking thing is started by the media , in order for it not to affect high school football , the media would have to be banned. We both know that won't happen. So all we can do ,is sit back and enjoy the ride.

We're certainly impressed the media finds the schedule worthy of note. But from my understanding, while certainly an opportunity to upgrade our schedule, the overriding issue was to get games with teams willing to play us. My rancor over people who criticize Trinity for getting this kind of attention is because if it weren't for the fact that most in-state teams won't play us unless they have to, we'd likely be criticized for not putting this kind of schedule together. It's a danged if you do, danged if you don't situation.

 

I agree, there's nothing we can do about it, but it doesn't make me any less cantankerous when people decide to offer their negativity.

I fail to see how striving for national honors is going to "corrupt" high school football. I see it more as lifting all of high school football as teams work to stay with the teams "moving on up" the national ranking ladder. I see it as nothing but a good thing.

I don't know the answer, but it does give an indication of what T, and I think X is headed in that direction, thinks of the overall competition in Jefferson County. 50 point games don't help anyone improve. It only helps everyone get some playing time, which frankly, I think overall is good for the nonstarters who also work hard everyday in practice. The bottom line is that outside Manual, Male, Ballard, Central and a few others, a lot of schools have to step up. Look at the few D1s in Jefferson.

In reality the bar has shifted in Kentucky. We used to be able to schedule in state and would get awesome competition. For whatever reason, that has changed. In general, the state doesn't pose much of a challenge for us. Sure there are still great teams throughout the Commonwealth, and we play them. Now, we are dealing with an un-said boycott. We still need to schedule games. We have done so. We scheduled the best teams that were willing to play us on fair terms. Since we have gone to this "regional" schedule we have shown signs of weaknesses. I am sure this season won't be any different. All that said, our goal remains, to win the state championship in 6A football in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Any other recognition that comes with that, if we're lucky enough to do so, is ancillary.
