Raising the Debt Ceiling

Featured Replies

Think about this statement from Clyde's link:

"if the cash shortage begins on August 3, as projected by Treasury, the government could find itself unable to make a $23 billion Social Security payment that has to go out that day."

Talk about political suicide, who wants that on their head? Personally, if our current leaders allow this to come to fruition, I will vote against every incumbent regardless of who their opponent is. If our government is incapable of governing, they all need to go.

A few items I read today:

Some believe the 14th amendment precludes the govt from forfeiting on its debt ie it can't be negotiated.

Some on the right say that if the POTUS invoked the 14th as a way to automatically pass the debt ceiling that the POTUS should be impeached. How exactly do you sell that? We're impeaching the POTUS for making sure that our obligations are met.

I think most will agree Debt Ceiling has to be raise. Can we also agree that spending has to be seriously cut. I know some could suffer because of it but isn't time to think about the great good of the masses long term?

I agree. But I don't believe, vehemently, that defaulting on debt obligations is the time for that. The budgets have been passed, that was the appropriate time for fighting spending. Now is reckless.

The Dems haven't passed a budget in over three years.. But then again, why would they pass one when they know that they are going to keep spending regardless..

The Republicans are willing to raise the limit if the Dems will make cuts and not raise taxes. Why not go that way and let the voters say who is right in November of next year.

Dems talk about compromise, but only if the Republicans compromise, not them.

I read today that the debt limit has been raised 75 times since 1964 (?). What makes anyone think that just raising the limit and taxes will do the job? If it has not worked the last 75 times, history says it will not work the 76th time.

Obama wants to tax corporate jets. He wants that little bit of money, no matter how small. Although people will say every little bit helps. But what about the state and local governments?

Let's say a local airport that caters to private jets has 30 jets and with the tax increase they lose 10 of those jets? How many people, from pilots to mechanics and those in between, become unemployed?

State and local governments will lose taxes from these now unemployed, who also will go on unemployment.

And what about the jet makers who will lose sales and have to layoff workers?

A losing effort for the state and local governments and not that a big of a winner for the Feds after they start paying out unemployments benefits and decreased taxes collected from the jet makers.

The Dems tried the luxury tax a few years ago and it was a total failure.. They put an excise tax on big ticket items like yachts,, All it did was put several American yacht builders out of business costing several thousand jobs.. The rich folks simply bought their yachts over seas and registered them there... Obamas own stimulus plan provided more opportunities for private plane purchases because he said it would help the economy, jobs ,etc.. Now he wants to go after them..

The waything's are going right now a HARD CORE, tea conservative/tea party person could promise to stick to their guns, and cut spending and mean it and really win alot of votes.

I don't see a way out of this other than making serious cuts. Honestly if my tax return get's cut in more than half I don't even care we just have to fix this problem because the alternative isn't acceptable.

I would need some convincing about raising the Debt Ceiling. Not 100% against it but hate the idea of being an enabler and just allowing DC to continue to spend without some serious cuts and look at the tax code.

Pretty good for a group that was labeled as just a FoxNews ploy and had no real movement behind it. :D

No question, but at the same time, just having the "Tea Party" label can also cost a candidate some votes just by affiliation alone. I've often said I share numerous principles with the Tea Party movement. I just don't like the manner with which some of the TPers go about making their voices heard.

I am with you SF. Cuts must be made but I am willing to pay more taxes IF...IF it fixes the mess and helps move all this to the back shelf. I think many Republicans would say the same thing. I know many are hard set against any tax increases but I think Boehner would be surprised at how many would be open to some tax increases IF it fixed the debt issue for the near future (next 5 years or more). The way I look at it, the hard line no tax and lower tax strategy from Reagan years on is basically a failure. Even Reagan recognized it when he increased taxes in his second term. Tax reduction by itself just drives up debt. It happened during the Reagan years and it happened under GW. Our tax rate right now is at its lowest point in the past 30 years. If we are going to get out of this mess, cuts must happen and I think some tax increase must happen.

There were to be budget reductions to come after the tax increases under Reagan, but the Dems lied and never passed them. If we raise taxes let us raise taxes on all Americans including those 47% or so that pay no federal taxes and then listen to the howling and screaming. Cut spending, it may hurt but it will work. We keep raising the debt limit and it has not worked. Take away the credit card, that is what Dave Ramsey says to individuals, it is now time to take away the Feds credit card.

If you want to give the government more money, they will gladly accept your donation. Start a grass roots movement to have people who think like you to hand over an extra 10% each year or whatever you think is fair. A good example of the people doing it theirselves, instead of waiting for government action.
