July 1, 201115 yr There were to be budget reductions to come after the tax increases under Reagan, but the Dems lied and never passed them. If we raise taxes let us raise taxes on all Americans including those 47% or so that pay no federal taxes and then listen to the howling and screaming. Cut spending, it may hurt but it will work. We keep raising the debt limit and it has not worked. Take away the credit card, that is what Dave Ramsey says to individuals, it is now time to take away the Feds credit card. If you want to give the government more money, they will gladly accept your donation. Start a grass roots movement to have people who think like you to hand over an extra 10% each year or whatever you think is fair. A good example of the people doing it theirselves, instead of waiting for government action. The problem is we keep cutting taxes and all it is doing is increasing the deficit. It is a failed strategy at curbing the size of government. We need to make spending cuts and increase taxes if we want to have quick impact.

We need to make spending cuts and increase taxes if we want to have quick impact. The problem is as we cut taxes, there has not been budget cuts to go with them. Besides there are other problems that have caused the situation we are in, but the left will not admit to that and eliminate those problems. How much more are you going to take from the American worker, in all categories of income. I am quite sure you have seen the stats that the wealthiest in the US pay the vast bulk of the taxes to the Feds. If you keep taking their money they will just pack up and go somewhere else. You can see this in the high tax states were many rich people have moved to states with lowerr taxes. And thse states are the areas of the country were the most of today's jobs are being created. There are many areas that can be cut with ease and some that will be tough. But all the Dems do are play the class warfare game. That is why they will not propose a budget and all we have seen is a lack of leadership from Obama, for he never developed any leadership skills at any level of his life.

That is the failure in the reduce taxes/keep taxes low philosophy. The belief that if we cut off the government's money, somehow government will decide to spend less. It doesn't work. There have to be budget cuts and Congress is where that has to happen. The House controls the purse strings in this nation. They need to push through their budget with cuts. The problem we have now though is cuts alone will not get us out of this hole. There have to be some form of tax increases. For all the complaining people do about taxes, the amount of taxes paid by the average American is much less than what is paid in other developed nations. The consumption tax rate in the US is about half what it is in other nations and that is a huge tax break for the middle class and below relative to other nations. As a share of GDP, the US tax rate is one of the lowest in the world. As to this comment ... I am quite sure you have seen the stats that the wealthiest in the US pay the vast bulk of the taxes to the Feds. If you keep taking their money they will just pack up and go somewhere else. ... baloney. No one is leaving this country, especially when many other countries would tax them even more than we tax them here.
July 2, 201115 yr And how have those higher tax rates helped these other countries you speak of?? Social programs have most of these other countries in trouble too..
July 2, 201115 yr How many folks on here actually believe that if we go along with more tax hikes that the government will use it to pay down the debt and balance the budget?? Or do you think they will spend it on more bogus stimulus hand outs, illegals, and bailing out other countries?
July 2, 201115 yr I am with you SF. Cuts must be made but I am willing to pay more taxes IF...IF it fixes the mess and helps move all this to the back shelf. I think many Republicans would say the same thing. I know many are hard set against any tax increases but I think Boehner would be surprised at how many would be open to some tax increases IF it fixed the debt issue for the near future (next 5 years or more). The way I look at it, the hard line no tax and lower tax strategy from Reagan years on is basically a failure. Even Reagan recognized it when he increased taxes in his second term. Tax reduction by itself just drives up debt. It happened during the Reagan years and it happened under GW. Our tax rate right now is at its lowest point in the past 30 years. If we are going to get out of this mess, cuts must happen and I think some tax increase must happen. To quote Al from Home Improvement, "I don't think so, Tim."

July 2, 201115 yr This is the problem with fighting the debt ceiling: the spending has already been approved, the debt ceiling is entirely about whether the US will meet its legal obligations. Having a national debate about cutting spending or raising revenues is necessary, to hold hostage the US's obligations in expenditures - most especially whether it will be a deadbeat country and fail to service its debt - is absolutely not the way to go about this and comes with perilous consequences. That is not hyperbole. If the US defaults, and that will be the eventual result if it is not approved, the US will be paying both massively higher interest rates on its debt, the dollar will be a far riskier investment than the euro, pound, or yen, and the economy will suffer a crushing blow. The ramifications of that and the prospect of recovery is utterly bleak. And make no bones about this, it is solely Congress's directive and it is the Republicans demanding promises before they will agree to the US meeting its obligations. If they want to do this during budget negotiations then that's fine, force the Democrats hand and work toward making some compromises. The debt ceiling, again, is not the venue. It was playing with fire several months ago, it's much more severe now. Default, and how does The United States of China sound?
July 2, 201115 yr It would help if the Dems and Obama had ANY plan at all.. Here is most of the problem...http://dailycaller.com/2011/07/01/gop-senator-blasts-obama-i-dont-know-why-he-even-wants-to-be-president/
July 2, 201115 yr After graduating from college in 1973, I filed my taxes from my teaching job in the spring of 1974. At that time I was quite proud of that fact. As the years have gone by, I have learned to detest paying taxes to the 'rat hole' of WDC. I have seen and heard the same things over and over ever since. Even learning more of how they gave out the same manure in the years before when I did not pay as close as attention. If you want to pay more, as I said in a previous post, send in some on your own and get some others to do the same. Use some of that freedom you have and lead the way. Never have looked it up to see if anyone is leaving, but some are moving their money out of the country, sitting on it or investing overseas. Many are leaving high tax states for lower tax states, the next step is leaving the country. We have tried the tax and spend for decades, but some cannot bring theirselves to see that it has not worked.

It isn't a tax and spend philosophy that is the problem. It is a reduce taxes and government will shrink philosophy that is a big part of the problem. No one in Washington will cut spending. Elections are won on pork and it doesn't matter if you are an R or a D - they bring home the pork. No one will make the tough decisions.

You got it VOR.....I am not at all for higher taxes, but it is time for many of the entitlement programs to be re-examined and cut. Spending is out of control...

We have tried to keep taxes down and the idots in DC keep spending. It is time to cut the spending. You have made a good defense for cutting spending. The idots of the past may have wanted to spend, but now they are being told to cut. We will see in November of 2012 who gets elected the spenders or the cutters. Go Cutters.
July 4, 201115 yr "Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: if it moves, tax it. if it keeps moving, regulate it. and if it stops moving, subsidize it." - Ronald Reagan
