How cheap are you?

Featured Replies

This isn't cheap. This is outright theft.

You do things when your young your not proud of, like I said in the post I am embarrassed about it looking back on it, but when you are living on your own and in college the dollar or two saved could go to something else. It's probably been a couple of years since I have ever done anything like that, I'm sure a lot of college kids have done much worst. It isn't like I was breaking in peoples cars to steal their stereo to pawn.

That is illegal and you can have been in lots of trouble though it is probably not worth the time fooling with it from the owner's perspective. Over the course of time though, you have to really think how much money you stole from these folks. I know many people who have done the same before. Or guys that would go to a buffet and order for one but two people would eat.

Admittingly, I have squeezed in some extra holes at the golf course before, but it is where I am a member and only late in the day when the clubhouse is closed.

I have thought about it before and I guess the dollar saved on the drink every now and then would add up, but it wasn't an everyday thing, just one of those after you pay rent, bills, books at the beginning of the semester, times are tight type situations. I do feel bad, but then again if you think about a franchise chain like McDonalds and how much they are really making, charging you 1.80 for something that costs them .20, then a college kid taking them for a few free fountain drinks every now and then (less than 10x) isn't going to put them under.

Another trick I have pulled in the past is the ole go to the golf course and pay for nine holes but play eighteen bit. Being I like to golf and did so three or four times a week on a college kids budget (when technically I only had the budget to golf once or twice a week) I had to find a way to do it somehow. :D I feel bad for doing that too but your only young once, and I sure like to golf. Plus these courses get paid 35+ dollars just for people to use that course, I guess a college kid ripping them for nine free holes every now and then isn't going to put them under, I am sure they are making out good as it is.

Actually, I think many golf courses are struggling.

Consider how many college kids eat at McDonald's. Then consider how much money they would lose if EVERY college kid did that every once in a while. It'd be in the millions.

Stealing is stealing whether it's from your elderly neighbor or a multi-billion dollar corporation.

Well I am sorry I stole a .15 cent fountain drink a few times (less than 10) when I was struggling in college, I didn't know that would get so much criticism. Like I said earlier, I'm not proud of it but rather ashamed and it also happened during a portion of my life I am not happy about. If thats the worst I can say I did though, I'm sure its no where near as bad as what most of you have done in your life. Everyone makes mistakes. You can make me look bad about a .15 cent fountain drink all you want and act like I was out heisting cars and taking them to the chop shop for cash, but even though I'm not proud of it thats not nearly as bad as what most college kids do/have done and that includes everybody. Nobody's perfect.

Amen! :D

And Swamprat, my family saves plastic cups, plates, forks, knives, spoons...we wash 'em and use them again. We do draw the line at getting them out of the dump, though.

Come to think of it, when you took Mrs. S and I to Graeter's, I didn't notice you dumping anything in the trash bin. Did you lift the plastic spoons? :D

Why do you think I carry such a big purse? :D

There was a great show on a couple of weeks ago about extreme coupon(ing). Some people were using coupons (coupled with in store promotions, manufacturing specials, and double coupon days) to save hundreds of dollars. There was one person in the Florence area that would use his savings to give to the local foodbank. He worked the coupouns to get a pallet of cereal for free. It was an amazing thing to watch/

When you are so cheap that you have excess to give, that is going full circle! Love that! I just scored a major coupon cereal haul---26 boxes for cheap. Plenty to give at the next school food pantry collection!

Dude, you NEED an HD TV. You can get a very nice TV for a few hundred bucks.

NEED? Come on. You're like my kids when I have to explain what the word means.

My Dad is the king of cheap. Growing up, I was embarrassed by this "methods". Now I brag about his "cheapness". He walked around the house, turning off lights--without checking if someone was in the room, collected rain barrels outside to water his garden, knew how to make "left-overs" from "left-overs" (those were the nights I made my own PB&J!). I could go on and on.

He grew up dirt poor during the Depression--and knows what it is like to go to bed hungry, to be cold because they did not have enough boots for all, and to be teased because they were poor.

Every time I pull out the ridiculous amount of cash to buy my son new size 13 basketball shoes, I show him the picture of my dad's high school basketball team. There--in the front row is my dad--with duct tape all around his basketball shoes. But that duct tape did not stop him from being the high school star, and he played in college, too.

Great stuff.

I do not believe our generation has done a very good job at teaching the value of a dollar. I talk a better game than I play in that area.

Quite a few are. I worked for one and was laid off on December 31.

I know what you are saying but this is part of the reason they charge 1.80. To make up for theft. It is built into the overhead.

My mother used to carry a slice of Kraft Cheese in her purse when going to Burger King. She'd then order a Whopper, but without cheese because they charge an additional 50 cents or so.

And she wonders why I'm such a tightwad today...

I don't know what's worse: your blatant disregard for the environment or dolamite's poor rationalization for stealing.

I'd have to go with Dolomite on this one in that my post is 100% pure BS.
