8th region draw

Featured Replies

1962 the region was held in Shelby County. Henry County has hosted since this time.

Yes Neerfan it would be nice for the semis and finals to be held on the weekend. The girls tournament needs the weekend for their semis & finals as their state tournament starts the following Wednesday. Boy and Girls games in the same region can not be played on the same night.

Awesome place but it is a good ride for the northern corridor of the 8th Region. Is there even any other venue in the 8th large enough to host?

Yes there is some places I would think, but some of the gyms would have to empty and re-pay for second game like some other regions do.

I would like to see the district winners host a first round game. Then the final 4 and finals at Henry.

I like that idea. It rewards the school and the teams that win the District and adds even more importance to District Championships.

Will never happen! The regionals are held at the biggest gyms, a lot of gyms would not be able to hold the much bigger crowds, and part of the Kentucky basketball regional experience is having all teams play at the same site, with two games on each of the first three nights.

New Lights!!!! They were installed very recently and some of the other gyms are brighter but sooooo much better. Shot the 31st girls championship game. ISO 2000, f2.8 at 1/250 so it beats the flash days!

The Roy hosted the 8th region boys tournament when the gym opened in 1963 and has hosted it every year since, the longest continuous run for a boys' regional tournament at the same venue in the state.

Dr. Dave Morris from Gallatin County - who is the PA announcer - and I always compare notes before each and every game, and we each try to announce (me over the internet and him over the PA) how many consecutive games it is before each game that night...

The last gym to host the tournament prior to Henry County HS was Shelby County HS in 1962 (Henry County beat Shelbyville in that tournament; ironically, the Wildcats have not won the tournament since on their home floor)

Not necessarily a bad idea, but I almost guarantee it will never happen. A tradition has been started, and everyone's pretty proud of it...

It's also the biggest gym in the region, and roughly geo-central...

I really wish the semis and finals were on the weekend.

They will be next year. Each year, the girls' and boys' tournament flip (as to which starts first). Next year, the boys' tournament will start with first round games on Monday and Tuesday, semis on Friday, and the finals on Saturday.

Colonel Mike, they have not switched back and forth for the last 4 years. Rupp Arena host the 1st round of NCAA tournament games a few years back to the girls tournament had to go first so that the NCAA and Sweet Sixteen didn't overlap. It has been that way since.

I believe he is referring to the 8th Region tournament, not the Sweet 16.
