May 19, 201115 yr More...http://blog.heritage.org/2011/05/13/morning-bell-the-truth-behind-oil-subsidies/ Senate blocks oil production.. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110518/ap_on_re_us/us_offshore_drilling There is nothing in either of these that excuses our being raped on gas prices. The only remotely legit one I've heard is that "prices rose because oil tankers were unable to trek up the Mississippi because of flooding." Yeah, that makes sense. Oil is incapable of traveling highways and all, y'know. Are you people who continue to defend gas prices raking it in, or what? It must be great to fill up your tank at $4 a gallon and be able to smile. Hope you're able to sleep at night.
May 19, 201115 yr For all the griping I hear about Obama not allowing more oil exploration in this country, I keep wondering ... were those same people complaining about it when the Republicans controlled the White House, Congress and the Senate from 2000-06?

Obama called for more drill leases and his own party blocked it..
May 19, 201115 yr Author For all the griping I hear about Obama not allowing more oil exploration in this country, I keep wondering ... were those same people complaining about it when the Republicans controlled the White House, Congress and the Senate from 2000-06? Oil prices didn't go through the roof until the Democrats took control of Congress and the Senate and made it clear they were going to be very unfriendly to any suggestion of increased exploration.

Pretty much so. People forget that the Republicans are not the only minority party able to bottle up the majority party's agenda.
May 19, 201115 yr Oil prices didn't go through the roof until the Democrats took control of Congress and the Senate and made it clear they were going to be very unfriendly to any suggestion of increased exploration.Of course, because we all know that Congress controls gas prices. I remember a lot of conservative talk-radio pundits blaming the rising cost of gas a few years ago to increased demand in such burgeoning economies such as China and India ... which frankly, makes as much sense as anything. Funny, but we just don't seem to hear that reasoning offered anymore.

May 19, 201115 yr Some oil-producing countries are now hoarding their oil for their domestic use. Russia(world's largest oil producer) has almost completely banned gasoline exports by imposing a 44% export tariff. Beijing has banned exports of diesel fuel. China has halted all exports of refined oil products. China also told all state-owned supplies to stop exporting diesel. We saw something similar with food a few years ago. It defies basic economics but it is a new reality. That doesn't bode well for countries like the US who will have to pay higher prices due to less supply on the open market. The next recession is on the horizon. Not there yet but it seems inevitable.

If the President was responsible then, then I assume you agree the he is now as well.
May 19, 201115 yr And I remember the left roasting Bush when prices spiked late in his term. If the President was responsible then, then I assume you agree the he is now as well. All we've proven is that we as a citizenry have no clue about the oil market.

If the President was responsible then, then I assume you agree the he is now as well.Did you even read my post? I didn't blame Bush then, and I don't blame Obama now. Oil is a worldwide commodity and subject to worldwide market forces, whether we like it or not. The problem is the hypocrisy. Those who blamed Bush then now don't blame Obama, and those that absolved Bush of any blame then can't wait to point fingers at Obama now.
May 19, 201115 yr Does it make sense for the US to start making a serious investment in oil shale? Is it a viable option? From what I have read the problem with shale is economics. High costs are causing some of the biggest North American shale gas producers are moving away from it and moving back to drilling for oil.
