Not sure about Thelen's final stats, but Holy Cross started packing the defense around him in the 2nd half. This opened things up considerably for Baker. The Colonels took what was there.

 

Well then, this is what really good players do, they lull you to sleep and at the end of the day WOW! What did I miss. Maybe I was doing too much talking in the stands in the first half with some of my CovCath buddies and only paid attention to the second half. It still struck me odd that he only had 2 fouls for the game being as big as he is.

^^Not impressed? He only had a double, double on the night and his running mates scored 22 and 14 while HC tried their best to stop him! As Flotsam stated, you take what you are given!

Odd fact, this will be the first time in high school Jake Thelan and his sister Hannah will play back to back games on the same court. This will make it easy on their parents, for a change. Good luck Jake and Hannah!

He is pretty agile for an Oldguy. When he was running over the bleachers delivering in-game stats, I reflected for a moment on Edwin Moses in his prime.

Agree with you on Reidenger. Huge point of the game when HC pulled within 5 points with around 5 minutes to go in the Fourth Quarter, Reidenger was responsible for a 3 pointer and then 2 to 3 times (seemed like in a row) broke the press moving up the middle of the floor and hit Baker on the baseline for 15 footers (and Baker hit the big shots when the team needed them). CovCath lead went from 5 points to 12 points in roughly a minute and that was pretty much the game. Also CovCath was (unofficially) 12 of 17 on free throws with Connelly making 8 of 11. Make some outside shots and free throws, play some intense defense and good things happen. Still way too many turnovers for CovCath with 10 in the first half, 9 in the 3rd Quarter and 4 in the 4th Quarter for 23 total. All of CovCath team seemed to contribute and also agree that Thelen had a good game and took what was given. I had Thelen at 5 of 9 from the floor and 1 of 2 on free throws along with his 10 rebounds. Need to beat Holmes and get a good draw opposite Dixie and NewCath!

Congrats to the Colonels. I am not sure what the CovCath stat crew had, but I think the most impressive stat to me was CovCath had 25 assists for 27 made baskets. In 18 years of doing this, I have never seen that high of a ratio of assists to made baskets. I also have 10 blocked shots for the Colonels which is a hard stat to record without a spotter. I say this only because blocked shots only occur if the ball leaves the shooter's hand, otherwise it is just a deflection and sometimes it is just a judgment call. Long story short, it is possible CovCath could have had more than 10 or less than 10. HC was able to force more turnovers in this game than back on Feb 4, 22 instead of 15, but we were unable to take advantage as an earlier poster alluded to. I will try and post the stats and play-by-play on cybersportsusa.com when I get home from work today around 3:30pm as well as the Holmes-Beechwood game. Good luck to both schools in the regional.

HC only cut it to 7, you are right. I thought Arlinghaus walked on the three. My wife looked at me and said did you think he walked. So, I can see the debate on this. It was at a critical point of the game. This really came down to HC missing too many makable shots. The few times I have seen CovCath they don't seem to put teams away, they have lulls in their play and teams come back and make it close or beat them. Still scratching my head why Baker sat down a lot of the 3rd quarter, I'm sure there is a good reason though. They are talented and will be no easy out for anyone in the region. I would think Dixie, NCC, or Boone/Ryle would not want to play the loser of this region in the first round next week. Same with the loser of Boone/Ryle (if that's who gets to the district finals).

Congrats to CCH. Having said that I wasn't blown away by the Colonels. Way too many turnovers to win the region. That will be their undoing. HC was what I thought they were-a team that has to shoot the three well and no interior game.

A great game from Baker and Riedinger, both hit big shots in the 4th.

Thelen had a good first half, but I believe took the second half off.

Thelen has to get stronger if he wants to play at the next level.

Has anyone noticed the steady play of the Reidinger kid and the intensity of Schult. Against Boone, Simon Kenton, and Holy Cross, Reidinger shooting big threes just need to find him more. Also, ever notice how there is more calmness and turnovers go down when Reidinger in game. Schult just making things happen, gotta like his hustle. Overall, clicking as a team right now, everyone contributing! Seem to be better when playing man to man defense!

 

Boxing out, less unforced turnovers, outside shooting and better free throw shooting will be key to a run.

CCH played the game they were supposed to play. Hard nosed man-to-man defense, dominance inside offensively and controlling the ball. They did these things and got a great game from Drew Baker. I kept waiting for HC to mount a challenge in the 1st half and it never came. They made the game moderately interesting in the 2nd half but the game was really never in doubt. CCH has been playing well for the past 2 weeks so I wouldn't think anyone would really want them in the regional 1st round.

I agree with everything but controlling the ball. They had way too many turnovers which did make it somewhat interesting as you stated. If they can clean up their turnovers, their chances will be as good as anyone's. They shoot well enough, defend ok (especially inside), and have a nice presence inside.
