Unless Valdosta (GA) falls apart, I think their record will be hard to reach by Highlands or any other team, anytime soon. That's a pretty big gap between first and second, especially when you consider how slim the margin is between some of the other top programs. At the start of this year Highlands was one win behind Male all-time (this includes the 12 reinstated HHS wins from 2004). Highlands then won 14 games and Male 11, so now the margin is a slim two-game lead for HHS!

 

Also, the numbers I cited are taken from the National High School Football Record Book and adjusted to account for the past two seasons' results. I think these numbers are correct, since for-sure Male entered this year with 800 wins and won 11 games in 2010, making their total 811 wins.

It is very nice to see and great for the state, but let's not compare the quality of competition that highlands faces week in and week out against that of valdosta. It's a whole different animal down there. Especially when you take into account the county school, loundes, has been siphoning off their talent throughout the last decade.

 

I think you missed the bigger target here. If I was inclined to put a pin in HHS' balloon to deflate it, which I am not, I would point to the KY playoff system which allows an undefeated team to amass 15 wins in in a perfect season (1 more than Auburn won to garner their National Championship this year). I would not point to a strength of schedule argument. As has been pointed out, HHS plays the district opponents it is obligated to play and then the best teams that will play them after that.

The competition in KY takes NOTHING away from Highlands' win total; they do it the right way and work their tails off year-around to win football games; if the rest of the state (outside of Trinity and a few others) don't get their act together, Highlands will soon be boasting "The Winningest High School Football Program in the Nation" as another tool to attract kids that want to be a part of the best.

I'll bet the GA. team doesn't play up two classes considering enrollment. They may have a tough schedule , but Highlands plays the Colerains , St. X's and Elders and sometimes Moeller of the GCL , which is one of the best in the country. Put Highlands in 3A where they belong and suddenly the Birds would be fighting for the top spot. How long has HHS been playing in 5A , as a 3A team ?

 

Highlands never lost a game to a 5A school while they played up 2 classes,so I would say they would exactly the same amount of wins if they would have played 3A for the 4 years they were in 5A.

Very good statistics for several well respected schools out of Kentucky. As far as those debating the difference between Highlands and Valdosta, I would rate them as equal. Regardless of which team is better, the numbers are very impressive. The numbers for all of the other Kentucky schools are impressive too.

Well to be clear I meant this thread as a compliment to Highlands, Mayfield, Male and the other KY. schools who are on this elite list and in no meant for there to be any bashing of Ft Thomas. If it was not for Mayfield's incredible accomplishments I would have never even looked at it which by the way I have to give my Cards great credit, they are not only on the lists but also had more wins in the last 5 years than the other top 10 teams except for Ft Thomas and are only one win from being at #6. Great job by my Cardinals.

It's pretty scary to consider the success Trinity has had in winning so much, given the relative youth of their football program (when compared to programs that have been playing football since the late 1800s and early 1900s). It's especially impressive, considering that Trinity typically takes on some of the very best competition in KY on a regular basis and also has a history of playing against first-rate out-of-state competition.

 

I believe I read where Trinity has the most prep football playoff wins of any program in KY (the KY playoff system began in 1959). Since different programs have had different years when they began playing football, I think the playoff win total is a very good measuring stick of football success for the past 50 years.
