Covington Latin 69

Kentucky s/f the Deaf 64

The Trojans get their 2nd win in a row and improve their record to 5-8 on the season.

With a quick glance of Covington Latin's game stats on the year at KHSAA.ORG, I came across a name of a player who is having an exceptional season. Sophomore (G/F) Mitchell Blewett has recorded a double-double in almost every Trojan game this season averaging probably somewhere in the 25 points a game range (without doing the math). In one game this season he scored 39 points and pulled down 20 rebounds. Because Covington Latin is an accelerated school where most students enter the 9th grade at the age of 12, I'm guessing that Mitchell Blewett could quite possibly be 13 or 14 years old.

Now before everyone says "Big deal... who does Latin play that matters?", I'd like to remind you that Covington Latin has a couple of names in its history book that some may have heard of like Major League Baseball great and 'Rookie of the Year' David Justice who averaged about 25 points a game in his Senior season back in 1982. Basketball great Brian O'Conner, a 1976 Latin graduate also went on to be Thomas More's 2nd highest scorer of all time.

Covington Latin has a history of struggling on the basketball court, but by always being younger than their opponents, and attracting to their school exceptionally talented students rather than athletes, any success that they have, be it in a player or their team, has always been worth noting and is terribly interesting. Does Latin have another Justice or O'Conner on their hands? I don't know, but it sounds like they certainly have a budding star that has been flying under the radar with zero exposure.

Again, Mitchell Blewett is the name and if anyone out there can add anymore information about him, I think that it would be very interesting to keep an eye on him and make sure that he doesn't go unrewarded and unnoticed just because he suits up for the Trojans of Covington Latin.

Great point and Thanks for throwing Covington Latin some love.

Before reading your post, I too had never heard of Mitchell Blewett, but I have now.

Again Thanks for pointing this out, and continued success to the Trojans!

Funny sidelight story about Justice. In 1982 we (Brossart) weren't very good, and Latin with Justice was formidable.

We were scheduled to play Latin at St. Thomas and I had been assigned the job of scouting the Trojans when they had played St. Henry in a previous game.

Jon Quatman was the coach at Brossart at the time, and I reported to him that Justice was exceptional and was going to get his 25/30 points a game, and suggested that instead of doubling him, like everyone was doing, to really double up the lesser players and force some turnovers.

Long story short. Justice had about 30 points at halftime and we were down double-figures. When I came down the steps and turned the corner to go to our locker room. There was Quatman, hands on hips staring daggers through me and asked sternly, "You got any other good ideas???" To which I answered, Yes, let's go to a 2-3 zone, thinking that Coach Fr. Ed Heile probably wouldn't pull us out of it.

Anyway, Quatman gave me one more chance and we came out in the second half 2-3. Sure enough they didn't pull us out of it - the wrong guys started shooting, and we ALMOST won. Key word "almost."

Great post and I think that Latin deserves to have a thread about this. Blewett seems to be an exceptional player and considering the age that kids enter Covington Latin, he can't be the normal age for a sophomore.

How long has Morrison been HC at Latin? I know he was there when I played in the late '80s.

Mustang, I had no idea that Heile coached basketball at Brossart, I remember him from St. Pats.

I would guess since the mid 80's on Morrison. I think he and Fr. Heile are the only two coaches for Latin School in the 40+ years they have played basketball.

Another big name to throw out from Latin School - Jeff Stowers. I believe he played there. He may have finished his senior year at CCH but I believe he played for Latin School before that.

I believe that Stowers did play at Latin. Good thread.

Heile didn't coach at Brossart, he coached Covington Latin. Jon Quatman was the Brossart coach.

I don't think Heile coached at St.Patrick, he was strictly a CovLatin guy.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Brian O'Conner was a CovLatin grad.

Another name from NKY High School history in the Cov Latin box score, Don Meyer grandson of former Holy Cross great of the same name on the 1965 State Runner up team.

Not St. Patrick HS but as the priest of St. Pats in Taylor Mill.

Speaking of Covington Latin, by the looks of the all the construction behind the school, it looks like they are building an expansion. Anybody know what's in the plans? I'm guessing that it's not a gymnasium.

I did not attend Latin, but believe it or not my introduction to attending high school basketball games as a kid all started with Latin because my older next door neighbor played for them. I remember attending numerous games in the '74/'75 season. Most of their schedule was on the road except for a couple of home games played at CovCath. I dug it because I got around to other gyms like St. Francis, Gallatin Co., Silver Grove, Dayton, Bellevue, Walton-Verona, Brossart, Country Day, Ludlow, Augusta, Williamstown etc... I always got a rush about going to different gyms. Being the pudgy little kid that I was, I also couldn't wait to see what different schools had for me to feed my face at the concessions stands. St. Francis gave out FREE POPCORN !!! I remember the Trojans beating the Green Devils of Dayton and then the entire team ran up into the stands to rip off from the walls any 'Beat Trojan' signs and the such.

If I'm not mistaken, Latin had a pretty good competitive team around '72 or so. I don't think that they've ever won a district tournament game, but I think during that era they might've given whoever they played a little scare.

Does anybody remember any particulars of that era when they weren't half bad? I was just a little too young at the time to have full recollection. I think that it might've been when Jeff Stowers played. I remember Brian O'Conner's name, but do not remember seeing him play. He graduated in '76 and would've been a junior when I watched the '75 season. Not sure how I missed him. Must've been too many visits to the concession stand.

True

Correct. The father of the two talented Scott High athletes played at Latin and TMC. I believe he was drafted late by the Knicks and played in Europe.

Jim Roebker-now Dr. Jim Roebker palyed at Latin I believe in the late 70's and was pretty good. He is the father of CovCath state tennis champion Jimmy Roebker...

It was actually '71 when they only lost by 5 or so to Holy Cross in the District.
