Walton Verona 51 Highlands 50

Final

Takeaways from the game

- Birds up 12 in 2nd half and let the Bearcats back in the game

- 8th Region officials are PATHETIC

- Mcneil is the real deal....great shooter and takes the ball to the hole with authority. ( He must have shot 20 FT's today thanks to the Refs)

- Birds start off in a Zone against an undermanned team with 2 Frosh

- Did I say 8th Region officials are PATHETIC ? :D

- The 2 WV Frosh are pretty good, they combined for 39 of their 51

- Birds had them rattled early in 2nd half with physical defense but didnt finish the game that way

- Crowley had 16 pts and Stewart had 12

- Mcneil had 23 pts and I am guessing 12 of them were FT's as he got every call driving to the hole and leaning into defenders

- 8th Region officials are PATHETIC

I got my first look at those 8th Region guys in stripes and even though WV hit some 2nd half shots to get back in it, they were down 10 and the refs called 2 bogus fouls in a row to stop the clock and put them on the line allowing them to convert 4 straight FT's. They called 2 fouls the entire first half I think and in the 2nd half called 23 I believe.

Birds had the ball with 2.4 sec left on their side of the floor and tried to lob it to Stewart who was double teamed and WV recovered it, Game over.

Wow. What do you say??

You had to be there to witness it is all I can say.

So, we kept hearing how Stewart's return was going to make this a completely different team. I put it out there not to expect a drastic difference, and it really wasn't fair to put that on the kid. Hope the district draw is favorable.

The kid didnt practice for 28 days what do you expect him to just jump into the fray and drop 20/10 in his past 2 games? They lost today because they didnt put the BEarcats away when they were up 10. They also lost because the officials who were terrible allowed WV to shoot most likely 20 more FT's then the Birds. I would love to get those stats. I almost walked over after the game and asked Ron Siry to give em to me.

"Stewart returning will make them an entirely different team that is for sure." From the NCC/HHS thread

"Hard to put that on a kid that has missed the whole season. If he's 100% healthy, he will not be in game shape. The rest of the team needed to improve in his absence. From the sound of it, that hasn't happened"

My reply to that statement

It has made them a different team but doesnt mean they are utilizing his presence to their best advantage. Once he gets back in basketball shape they should be fine but unfortunately that may not be until the season is over.

Not a good game both ways for the zebras today. The JV game was even worse than the varsity game. Good win for WV given they lost one of their starters in the first quarter and never returned the rest of the game.

Yeah I was warned by a Walton parent of a player that they are awful. Apparently they costs them a couple games against SK this year.

On the bright side the Birds JV rolled 47-32 I believe was the final.

Maybe if Highlands had Fangman they could have won this game. He did score 21 against Holmes, my favorite to win the ninth region.

If this was your first taste of 8th region refs you better hope it was your last. There is a couple of good ones and the rest are awful, no matter who you are for. I have watched Mcneil a few times this year and yes he gets a lot of calls, calls that should be absolutely nocalls.

Yeah maybe if he would have followed where his daddy went to school. He would be a nice additional scorer.
