I think you also have to consider she may never be the same no matter how much rehab she gets.

In all honesty, I am fine if Gifford rehabs for her entire term. She is her district's elected representative and she was shot while carrying out some of the duties of the office. And, given that our elected representatives have fine health care coverage, she is entitled to take full advantage of it.

So the citizens of that district shouldn't have representation? I agree that she should be entitled to the health coverage but if the rehab is to be an extended one I thing a replacement should be appointed/elected (whatever the procedure).

If there is a procedure in place that would allow for a temporary replacement, I'm all for it. I don't know that such a mechanism exists.

Naturally, but not under these circumstances and to say she's livid is just wrong when she won't even discuss the possibility and has been nothing but supportive during this tragedy. And then we all sit on here and moan about how mean politics has become.

If she were "forced" to step down, would it not then become open season on democratic reps who had republican governors in that state. Does Loughner accomplish just what he set (?) out to accomplish? I don't want him "winning" in any since of the word.

You're right, and I'm sorry. It was meant to be tongue in cheek as Hearsay says, but I can see it was simply wrong. I do feel that Brewer would love to have that seat for a Republican. From what I know of her, which is admittedly less than her inner circle, I don't find her to be much of a sensitive person, so my feelings toward her are not favorable at all. In my mind, it wasn't much of a stretch. But there is no evidence, as I don't believe she's ever come out to say what she things about the situation with Giffords seat. So, I do apologize.

I don't know for sure but would have to believe there is a procedure in place in the event a memeber of congress or the senate were unable to fullful their duties. What did Mass do when Kennedy died? I know Gifford isn't dead but would have to think the policy would cover this as well.
