Coaching Change at Whitley

Featured Replies

I see nothing wrong with the article before he made it official. One job of the media is to get the news out first, and that is what the paper did. How many times do you see where other coaches getting hired or fired, or players get traded get reported before it is official?

Why was he fired?

Could someone post a link to the article ?

It's on the Times-tribune website, but you have to have a subscription to read the full article.

As for whether the paper jumped the gun, it was reported as unconfirmed and that the kids were the source. I'm fine with that.

And maybe they couldn't get a source to speak on the record to confirm or not that they were moving or leaving or whatever. In this case, the paper had players speaking out by name, and if Whitley didn't want it to leak out they should have told the players to keep it quiet. Do you think that when someone like Joe Paterno steps down, don't you think it will be reported before it is official at a PC?

Maybe he didnt ask his players not to comment because he didnt think he had to worry about a newspaper reporter sticking a mic or notepad in their face since it had never happen. What if a newspaper reporter had ask LC players right after the Paintsville lose what Coach Mitchell had said what he said at half time. Is that what its going to come to in High School athletics after each game and each team meeting , telling 15, 16, 17 and 18 year old kids not to comment about what was said.

Nothing ANYONE can or will say will convence me this was right

I can't really put Paterno and Campbell in the same league. You can't say that high school coaches should be treated like college coaches. ;)

It was in the paper what Coach Mitchell said to the team at halftime.

Sorry...I forgot...Reynolds and Chaffin quoted right after the game as to what Coach Mitchell said.

Maybe none of the above mentioned coaches told their players before they handed in their papers. I would think most would meet with their teams when the offical notice had been submited. Sounds like Coach Campbell may have wanted the article ran before he offically gave his resignation.

Yes you can....its called RESPECT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In fact I think they should be treated better. They are coaching young teenagers, 19-24 or 25 yearold men.

The paper jumped the gun and was more interested in sensatioinalism and they fullfilled that by talking to kids......when adults who are smarter withheld comment.

The Corbin Times has always been treated with respect and fairly by Coach Campbell. In fact he has gone out of his way to be fair to them, particuliarly when the did not see fit to send a reporter to the game, but only got comments and stats from him on the phone after the game then, obviously it was not a two way street. With all the baby pictures I am surprised that anyone found the article anyway. Players are young and immature and say things sometimes that incite problems and it up to the adults to be more responsible, except for the Legitimate print media, you know the ones the Weekly World News, National Enquirer and the Corbin Times.

Nosey Mommies called the paper...no great feat of investigative journalism there....

Bottom line and back to the subject.

I thought Coach Campbell showed a lot of class with his resignation. If you are interested in reading it in its entirety, it is in the Corbin this Week. His commetns were professional and showed that he truely cared about the program. It will be hard to find a person who could care more than Mike Campbell.

Why was he fired?

He must not have been able to deal with the communication problems they evidently have down there in Whitley. Looks like your getting ignored CHIEF. :p

It is bad when parents stick their nose in places that is does not belong. I thought maybe someone had given the Media a "heads up" in order to promote their objectives. Coach Campbell has been nothing but nice to me in all dealings I have had with the man. I wish him the best. I hope Whitley football does not follow the same road as the basketball program over there and change coaches every three to five years. Jim Black and Rick Rains would be the two most desired interviews if I were on the committee.
