Whats wrong with Highlands basketball

Featured Replies

When you go to the state meetings and medical requirments from the khsaa they will tell you that playing one sport is not the best thing to do. Burn out plus your body mussel will not change as if you were playing other sports.

Well if the KHSAA says this then you know it must be true.:D

The Catholic Grades School League in Campbell County is fabulous. Hence, NCC, BB & old St.T have had great basket ball as a result. A few years ago, I was involved in something referred to as the Ft.T recreational BB league. It was fun, but pretty weak. The school district needs to address a feeder program in the grade schools if they want to turn the situation around. There is a model to observe, if anyone has any questions.

IM I would suggest that you and some of the others that have young boys get together and see what you can get put together. Perhaps you could even get a group of boys together and go and play in the AAU leagues so that your team can be anointed the next coming to the middle school. In all seriousness, playing in the Moyer league, the Dayton league or the Newport league are not going to prepare a kid to play at the middle or high school level because the competition is just not there. Be satisfied to play in an AAU league and go about .500 or so with a school based team and you will see the results later on. Q and Bird Bath can attest to this fact as they both have experienced it first hand. To be the best you have to play the best. Hopefully as Q said in an earlier post, there is someone in the basketball program that will get these kids interested in the game of basketball at a young age much like the football program has done for many years as vouched for by HHSBirds 2010. The baseball program has started to do it and now the basketball program needs to follow.

This thread was started because I see to many kids walking away from the basketball program at the high school level. Why cant a local league work for basketball like it does for football. A league that teaches the basics to all kids and then have multiple middle school teams on the boys side so when half the boys decide to play football only the numbers dont drop off at the high school level. Better yet build a basketball academy just like FTJFL and just not play middle school games.:idunno:

Haven't you guys solved this problem yet? This thread just won't seem to die.

Just think what we would be subjected to if the football program went 10 years without putting in hardware in the trophy case.

Highlands loses to Male by 28 w/o Stewart once again shows the lack of depth in the program and its probably going to get worse next year with only three juniors this year. Next years team probably will have one BB only player, which I dont think is essential but it would be nice to have more than one in the program.

Only 3 jrs? Highlands just can't seem to get out of this cycle where entire classes go missing. Whats the deal? 6-6-6 is the formula. Now it doesn't always come out like that, but 3 in a class is abysmal, and how may seasons have the Birds had a whole class missing? You cannot succeed by running the program this way.

Yes only 3 but like others have said, what Juniors walking the halls would make a difference? I can only think of 1, Drake Bruns. He would be primarily a defensive specialist and probably the the 6th man. The 4 Sr's have great chemistry when they are on the court but getting all of them on the court at once is what the problem is this season.

They should be fine next year with 3 SR's, (New, Towles, Lewis), 4 Jr's (Turner, Witte, McCoy, Collinsworth), 4-5 sophs (True, Hergott, Hope, Houliston, Schweitzer, Buten). But lets play this season before we start writing off the future.

We all know its taking the football gus time to get in basketball shape but we still want to analyze all of these games in December like the sky is falling. Getting Stewart on the court and healthy is the key for this season. Like I said before, the chemistry is good with the 4 srs.

Wow. Only 3 or 4 kids in a whole class worthy of lacing them up? I'm not familiar with the kids, but that number is disheartening.

You only need 5 on the court at a time but the days of having 15 kids on the bench will continue to be over due to kids choosing football at an early age.

We never had 15 on the bench, more like 10 until JV was over then the sophs that weren't dressing varsity, then dressed. Back to my original question. If we want to tag the issue on football at Highlands, why was this not a problem when Highlands was winning on the court and gridiron? Something is different.

Yes, kids are specializing in one sport more these days. Do you honestly remember the offseason football program being like it is now back in the 80's and 90's? There is only one week where they arent doing something related to football and that is the dead period. Or maybe they may take a week in June and pick up a basketball or something but that is about it. Even the kids that want to play both find it very difficult to participate in offseason basketball stuff due to football. In June last year when there was 3 weeks of team camps lined up by Coach Flynn. One week you would not have 2-3 footballers due to football camps or the next week you would not have another footballer. Towles, a kid who played AAU basketball until 8th grade didnt even particpate in any summer hoops and didnt pick up a ball until Dec 10th this year. You cant tell me that Lorenzen and Smith did the same.

Provided all the footballers decide to come back!

I think we are getting close here. I tend to want to leave Smith and Lorenzen out of these conversations, as they are aberations. You may never see the likes of two athletes of their calber for decades. So do we say that the times of Highlands having legit shots at regional titles is something of the past due to football overwhelming the program? Or do we look at some past regional winners that had few if any footballers and try to find a solution in that vein? As a past HHS bballer, I just hate to resign to the fact that my Bluebird basketball program cannot rise to the prominence of where it once was.
