Just a crime that the Big East is a BCS conference.

Teams like Boise are praying the system stays as is....They know in a 1 game situation where they have a month to let injuries heal, and gameplan, they can play with anyone. They also know in a playoff system, with only a week of recovery and gameplanning, they have no shot at a title.

 

I'm pretty sure that's not their viewpoint at all.

It makes games interesting in the regular system that would be boring without it.

Who would have cared about Auburn/South Caronlina except because it had National Championship ramifications.

Still much better than it's predecessor, which we have more a possibility of going back to than getting a playoff.

You really just compared the college football bowl system to the civil rights issues faced by African-Americans? Wow, now I've really heard everything...

 

Is it not discrimination? Sure, it's not as nefarious and lives aren't at stake, but it's definitely economic discrimination. I never suggested all forms of discrimination are equal, but roll your eyes all you want since it suits your argument.

Even with a 16-team playoff, lots of people would for two reasons ... it was the SEC championship game and South Carolina would have been playing for a spot in a playoff.

No doubt. I don't understand that argument when everyone is glued to all NFL games, NCAA basketball games...etc. There's a reason EVERY sport has a playoff system, including the lower divisions of NCAA football. For some reason the largest division can't get it right.

I've never understood the argument about devaluing the regular season. To me, nothing more than an 8-team tournament is necessary. I'd set it up like so:

 

-5 guaranteed berths to champions of ACC, Big Ten, Big XII, Pac-10, and SEC

-1 berth guaranteed to the highest ranking champion of all other conferences, provided that team ranks in the top 8 (perhaps include Notre Dame in some type of qualification)

-2 berths permitted to at-large teams

 

That means 75% of the teams in the playoff would have to win their conference, thus making every conference game of the utmost importance. The non-AQ champions would need to win every game to get into the top 8 to guarantee a berth, making all of their games important. And the at-large spots provide for odd-ball situations like the Big Ten a few years ago when Ohio State and Iowa both went 8-0 but didn't play each other (when OSU was the winner due to higher BCS ranking) and adding a second team from another conference who could well be one of the 2-3 best teams in the country (similar to Michigan a couple years ago, and countless other examples).

 

Play the first round on campus the weekend before Christmas, when this season's bowls start. Play the semifinals on New Year's Day at neutral sites like Pasadena, New Orleans, Miami and make that day the most important day in football again. And then play the title game at a rotating site like the BCS currently does on January 10 (or whatever) like this season. That would guarantee anywhere from 10-14 days (or more) between games to help out with travel, game planning, and injuries.

 

Make sure no playoff games and bowl games are played at the same time, thus eliminating some potential competition that a bowl game couldn't compete with. And don't tell me bowl games wouldn't still be successful because of 34 of the 35 current bowl games have absolutely no bearing on the national championship picture, which is no different than it would be with a playoff. People will still go watch their teams.
