I was there, I didn't hear a whistle, but I did hear it on the replay later on the news. On the Louisville news that night the officials were quoted as saying they blew the whistle because they thought Hergott stepped out of the end zone, but he was nowhere near the edge of the end zone.

I don't know but I really don't like discussing a football mishap that happened years ago. I'm also sure that the player that messed up in Florida would wish that it would also just go away. Pretty sure the boy in Florida has done plenty to help his team win and doesn't need a Kentucky web site discussing his mishaps but maybe praising the good that he does. So do we really need to go back and discuss all the mishaps of the ole timers on this site that have had that one play they just wish would never come up in discussion again.:idunno:

 

You learn from mistakes is why things like this come up IMO.

The kid may not have known the rules, but why didn't he run the play that was called? They were set up in an obvious kneel down formation. Just run the play the coaches call and you are fine.

 

This play was obviously not intended to be a kneel down (watch the upback on the right and the deep back). It was 4th down and the clock would have stopped as soon as the player kneeled, giving the ball back to the other team with time stil on the clock. The coach probably instructed the QB to run around until the clock expired then fall down.

1. That is a terrible formation to have the kids in to run around- line the QB up in the gun or run your punt formation. This gets the kid away from the line of scrimmage to have time to run around. Plus there is at least one upback there with the QB or punter in case of a fumble.

 

2. You absolutely have to tell the kids to get down once the whistle blows.

 

Point 1 is an obvious mistake by the coaches based on the video; we'll never know if the kid was told to get down, but if wasn't coached to do that, how would he know to do it?

I agree completely; coach is at fault if he didn't instruct the kid to take a knee as soon as the clock ran out. You can't count a 16-18 year old player always knowing how the rules apply in uncommon situations like this.

IN the shotgun, are you serious, NO WAY!

I was told once when running the clock that this is the reason you are not permitted to use the AutoHorn in HS Football. When the clock hits 0:00, the horn should not sound if the ball is in play in an effort to avoid additional confusion.
