What is everyone's take on these games? You have teams traveling hundreds of miles in some cases just to be whipped. Does this align itself with the mentality that everyone gets a trophy? Shouldnt they just reduces the classes and make it tougher to get into the playoffs. This way the season would be shortened and it wouldnt go into December.

Absoluely zero doubt in my mind - 1st round games are good. I want every team in football in the playoffs, just like every other high school sport. Yes, 80% or more of these games are going to be lopsided. But there are many first round games that should be good matchups. If I am not mistaken, there have been #4 seeds beat #1 seeds. I would much rather err on giving every team I can a shot in the playoffs versus omitting from the playoffs good teams that play in very tough districts while teams that aren't half as good as those teams get to play on from a weak district.

I agree VOR. I will never forget Bryan Station a few years ago.:eek:

IMO, they should just go back to district winners and the runnerup going to the playoffs. I know on ocassion there will be upsets the first round, but the season could be shortened and not risk senseless injuries.

If I am not mistaken didn't SK beat a couple or a few #1 seeds on their way to the state finals a couple years ago...I believe SK was a #4 seed.

Yes, SK was a #4 seed and played in the state championship. But they wouldn't have even been in the playoffs if we eliminated first round games.

I played on a team that was a 4 seed .. that easily handled a one seed back in 1993.

The next week, we went on to beat the defending state champion (Highlands) in overtime (we were up on them at one time 20-0)

The next week, we got beat by CovCath 7-3 (mainly because a DB slipped on a mysteriously soaking wet field--when there had not been rain in 3 weeks).

 

Both teams had beaten us pretty easily earlier in the season. Which speaks to how much we improved. (Injuries were not a factor either).

 

For these kinds of reasons alone--they need to stay.

Kids (regardless of whether it is a "everyone gets a trophy" mentality) are still at a point in their life where David can beat Goliath .... there are great lessons to be learned there.

 

Teams need to continue to push the improvement angle. If a coach truly wants to suceed .. he can use these 1st round games as something to hang his hat on.

On behalf of the Blue Mafia, I would like to enter our official objection to the suggestion that Cov. Cath's '93 2nd round playoff field was moist as the result of an improper purpose. We support our Park Hills VFD. If their training requires an occasional visit to Wooten Field, who are we to stand in the way??
