Any Advice?

My daughter' date=' who is a senior, was recently cut from her high school varsity basketball team. The coach's reason was that she did not have the "skill set" to be a varsity basketball player. Their JV coach gave her most improved JV player award last year. She has played AAU ball the last few years. She has letters from 15 colleges that are interested in her playing college basketball and the same week that she was cut, she went on a college visit. She has another college visit scheduled next Friday and she is trying to schedule two more. Several of these 15 colleges want copies of her schedule so they can come watch her play. [b']What is she supposed to say to these college coaches?[/b]

She should tell them what has occurred and have them contact the coach for more information.

I don't think I can ever remember a potential college recruit playing JV his/her junior season whether they play in the V games or not. Either this team is "extremely" loaded or the coaching is very poor because 1) they cut a college recruit stating "lack of skillset" and 2) they played a college recruit in JV games risking injury to a key player.

SS...no matter what, there's way more to this story that is not being shared either with you or with us and without hearing from the "other side" there's no way for this board to share advice. Something tells me if we hear the other side we would have that "ah ha" moment.

Please understand the skepticism/confusion...many of us have followed Girl's basketball in KY for many years and have never seen a college athlete get cut from her HS team for "lack of skillset" nor have we seen a team so loaded they have the luxury of cutting a college bound player. In either case, we are either talking about the KY State Champions this season OR a soon to be fired coach! ;)

Seems like your daughter has a grip on the situation. Regardless what happened the bottom line is a determined player is being held back in the hands of a highschool coach. Is this individual really that qualified to be in this role??? What a shame. I like how fingers start pointing at the kid. She played for 3 years and now not skilled enough...Seriously...And I repeat what a shame

I am speechless!!!! My daughter has played three years already, getting college offers played many minutes last two years..........................Coach is covering something........AD and coach are too close!!

I don't remember a potential college player ever being cut either. Our team is not loaded! If there is more to the story I do not know it. I have also followed girls basketball for many years and have never seen a girl get cut for "skillset". I'm also pretty sure we are not talking about the State Champions

If we aren't privy to the details, we shouldn't rush to judgement should we? For sure, more than one coach has made the mistake of cutting a player who should have been kept. But certainly the same can be said for the coach who kept someone who have been cut, and the latter probably occurs more often than the former.

Coaches are not perfect, still they have an obligation to the whole more than any one individual part. Plus, many of us may be able to think of examples of kids with a good upside when young, but who never developed or matured early and declined by the senior year.

Since most coaches want to win, not too many trim their roster of "studs" to keep "duds". Without knowing the details, I can't make a determination for sure. There simply aren't too many coaches who are in the coaching business to lose, though. Plus, there are several small colleges that contact "tweener" players to fill their JV roster as a recruiting tool for the school's admissions department. My suggestions are to: A) just keep on with the b-ball lessons and prep for the freshman college season, or B) get over it, move on and enjoy the senior year where you are - minus the b-ball. Either way, this young lady's attitude will determine her altitiude from here on out. Good luck!

If she is playing AAU, not being on the HS team will not stop her from being seen by colleges.

I'm interested to know a few of the 15 colleges showing interest. Also, if she wants to continue to play basketball, I'd encourage her to spend the season working out & getting ready for AAU.

If she was cut then there should be no issue of her old school releasing her. She should be able to transfer. Maybe this old school is special but I can't see any other school turning down a player that is valued by the next level.

After reading that i'm kinda surprised she already wasn't on varsity? Jordan got cut in high school too if it inspires your daughter, best of luck to her.

Michael Jordan did not get cut from his high school team. As a sophomore, he did not make the varsity team but he played JV and was the star of the JV Squad. Supposedly he had a few 40 point games on the JV level. After his sophomore year, he grew a few inches & made the varsity team as a junior.

I thought he was cut his freshman year of high school?

My reply to the AD would be that by developing the player you ARE developing the program. This is one of the oddest stories I have ever heard. I still can't believe their isn't something else involved here. How good is this high school team? Very few teams are good enough to cut a player of this caliber if their are truly this many colleges interested. Very strange, indeed.

I did tell this to the AD but he still agreed with the coach. The school is fairly new. There is some talent on the team but they have yet to have a winning season. I took all of the letters from the colleges and copies of emails from the college coaches to this meeting and the AD only thumbed through them but would not look at them. Another post asked if academics were an issue. No, they are not. And Bearcat, I agree with you, it is a shame and very sad that a school can do this to a child
