Czar, I have never known of P'burg saying no to anyone unless there schedule was already full. I agree that JC has one of the toughest schedules in the state. P'burg does not play a cup cake schedule either.

Non District games including Belfry, Breathitt, Sheldon Clark, Pike Central, & the #1 1A team in WV, Matewan. I would love to see P'burg & JC play each year. I think it would become one heck of a rivalry game.

Research:

North Travel milage in new district: 155 miles. Travel milage if they change to the other (perry) district 250 miles. North would had almost 3 hours time on a bus.

South Travel milage in new district: 170 miles. Travel milage if they change would be 245. South would drive almost 2 hours more.

 

Whitley in the proposed district would be about 295. In the other district would be 260. Whitley would save at most an hour and cost the laurels five.

So you are going to make 2 schools drive almost 100 miles EACH more to save 30 miles in another school? Makes no sense

 

North is ON THE SAME EXIT AS THE SOMERSET SCHOOLS, if anything it makes no sense for South to be in that district instead of North...and no sense for whitley to drive all the way to berea

 

Whitley would pass both North and South laurels just to get to any other team in the district. Also, if you have ever been to williamsburg, Whitley is definitely a mountain school, so it makes sense for them to be in a mountain district.

I don't question JC's schedule...what I do question is the coaches around them...PLAY LOCAL TEAMS...don't run from JC....play them or don't gripe about "can't find a game" "can't fill the schedule" I just picked them because they had sumbitted a response

I didn't call out other teams.....I pointed out that those teams had called out others in their public official response to the KHSAA (See Simon Kenton)

Lots of school districts are going to a 60 mile rule for all sports. I know my district has it and I have to be factor that in when scheduling. Is it important enough game to ask my boosters to pay $100-$200 or more to drive a bus there.

 

Meaning you either CANNOT schedule a game beyond 60 miles or your boosters have to pay for each mile beyond the 60 miles. Not sure of the cost per mile but I believe it is over a dollar a mile.

 

So which has priority - school rules to control expenses or KHSAA 'tournament' rules? Is KHSAA working with the schools to address this likely conflict in directions - physically larger districts in times of shrinking travel capability? If gas goes to $4 a gallon or higher, does the 60 miles turning into 45 miles?

 

The fact is that going from 4 to 6 classes is costing this state's school some serious money. And now the the forced restrictions on 1A and 6A are now creating even more situations that drive up travel expenses and cost.

 

Bigger classes mean closer schools and less worries about changing class structure.

Not likely that anyone's going to badmouth Highlands for their strength of schedule. Other things, maybe.

 

The more folks run away, the more FTH will step up to find quality competition.

 

Love 'em, hate 'em, or somewhere in between, at least (me, anyway) respect 'em.

 

Just a quick check showed Highlands opponents record to date was 34-33. I could have missed by couple. They are also playing Ryle 2 times which is a good team . I know everyone is afraid of Highlands but I think with their tradition they could have found someone in KY, TN, OH that would have played them instead of Ryle twice.:popcorn:

You are so right. Having lots of local schools around you and convincing them to play you are two very different things. I don't doubt a word of what you posted here, it is tough for the better football schools to get competitive games in EKY.

I agree PBurg does play a tough schedule and it would be one heck of a rivalry game but I can promise you that JC has tried to schedule PBurg every year since Jim Matney came to Johnson Central. As a matter of fact we have a bowl game that is sponsored by Big Sandy Recc which serves both Johnson and Floyd counties and they wanted to have a matchup with JC and Prestonsburg. BSRECC offered PBurg close to $10,000 and they were willing to sponser a holiday basketball tourney at PBurg but for some reason the brass at Prestonsburg declined.

I believe that you are supposed to count all students within your school system. With that said it looks to me like JC was trying to move down away from Highlands (thus possibly giving an inaccurate count) now all of a sudden counting these kids will help them. Lots of school on the borderline of student classifications, finds ways to use "fuzzy math". Maybe it burnt them this time!

First of all I believe the KHSAA gets the enrollment figures from the KDE so how can JC or any school give an inaccurate count? These enrollment numbers are audited often, so it's kind of hard to use "fuzzy math" isn't it? The people at JC were suprised back in 2006 when the alternative school was counted and equally suprised when the altretnative school wasn't included in this go around. I just don't understand why they were counted back in 2006 and not this time. I'm sure it was an oversite and it will be corrected. Everybody seems to be jumping on the band wagon that JC is trying to get away from Highlands. I believe even if JC is moved to 5A that the two schools will still play each other. I'm telling you I enjoy playing them and I have great respect for Coach Mueller and his program and I'm sure that most of the Highlands fans feel the same way about us.

Though I agree it may now be time to put the past behind and set a P-burg/JC game, there's more history about this issue that extended well before Coach Matney took the Central job.

 

You see, for many years before that Prestonsburg was the team that had difficulty scheduling games against local teams. Central habitually turned P-burg down in scheduling games. So, Prestonsburg is now doing nothing more than what Central did to it over years before.

 

But hopefully, this is soon to be a buried issue. The years on either side are approaching even. :thumb:

You act as if Bell would have to make these trips every year. The reality is they would only have to (at worse) make the trips every other year. But you don't hear Paducah Tilghman,Ft. Campbell, Etown, Central, etc. complaining about having to drive all the way to "the mountains". It's not all about Bell Co. and their little comfort zone of staying in the mountains.

It still comes down to your complaint being based on travel deep in the playoffs. That is part of playing high school football.

Who else in the state will have to drive 6 hours + on a bus to play a game? That should not even be a possible scenerio. Imagine a group of boys playing the most important game of their lives to that point and having to travel 6 hours and then have very few fans because of the travel. Its just not a good situation IMO.
