What was wrong with Pike the Dixie QB? He seemed a bit dazed but went back into the game and then he and one of the DH coaches seemed to be having words.

 

While they were not cussing, two older HHS fans sitting by me were going off on the men in stripes and some of the HHS players. What was funny, was even the HHS fans by me were a bit annoyed by both of these gentlemen actions. I mean getting upset by the stripes calling off sides on plays by the HHS linemen that clearly ever one saw was off sides just doesn't make sense.

 

As CovCathiRadio said, the turning point of the game was the Int by HHS. The DH player was open and Pike hit him but with a 90 mph fastball that the kid couldn't handle. If Pike throws the balls at about 50 mph, he then still hits the open man and DH IMO goes on to score.

 

Was there even a HHS player within 5 yards of the Dixie RB when he fumbled the ball?

Sure would love to be a fly on the wall, and see what the coaches say to Pike after this game!

 

I thought I read somewhere that you were at the game. If you didnt see the hit and strip then perhaps some of the other things you mentioned are questionable as well.

I sat just past the Dixie press box with my good friend Coach Shields and his lovely daughter, the best physical therapist in the business. And yes, there were a couple of gents in the top row that were not happy. Not a problem in my book, just not used to seeing it.

 

Dixie came in believing they were going to win, there crowd all had the "stop the tradition" shirts on. Dixie players were playing with high emotion, a few shoves here and there on the field but nothing over done.

Could not believe the amount of time that the Dixie "O-line" was giving Pike to throw throughout most of the 1st Half. Pike seemed to be just able to sit and look and look and look for a open man.

Oh Lord, you got me there. I know exactly who you are talking about. Sorry! Those two are without a doubt the two worst when it comes to complaining. They have been coming for years ad years and neither ever played, or at least looks like they played the game. Not that that matters. But yeah, I know who you are talking about.

The game was very much a surprise....billed as Pike vs. Towles by the media, the game lived up to the hype. Pike impressed me but he could have "smoked a cigarette and eaten a hamburger" with the Highlands pressure tonight.....nonexistent IMO. If Towles had that kind of time, he would have been just as effective. Apart from the special teams and defensive TD's, this game was even through 3 qtrs....haven't seen the Bluebirds stall on so many possessions in a long time....pass heavy offense tonight...I want to know where our running game went? :confused: Towles seems to be our most effective runner. I got a weird sense that even though Dixie was in this game through at least 2 and a half qtrs, that Highlands was very much in control of the game. Dixie represented very well and should be proud of their effort. They pressured Towles all night...The score was certainly not indicative of the game. Gold looked like AC running tonight. Nice to see Sullivan back in action....Great team effort tonight from the Birds, but it was far from the blowout win that just about everyone predicted......

Abner laid a nice hit on Bruns on that play and Seidl picked up the ball. (Or the other way around?) Either way, the Dixie ball carrier was hit which caused the fumble.

 

BTW, Jordan Streeter is extremely fun to watch. Compton and True are big bruising backs, while Streeter simply hits the hole hard and then a burst of speed. Not sure of his official final stats but I had him at 6 carries for 55 yards at one point. I really think he should touch the ball more, but who am I to question Dale? Just win, baby!

Please don't let this thread become a discussion about a couple of guys that were yelling. My point was to say that I'm not used to hearing Highlands fans yelling. They were not out of control, they were not yelling anything inappropriate, they were just yelling when something went wrong. I'm not at all complaining about them. I just made the comment to Mama New that if Highlands lost once in a while, your fans would be better at dealing with adversity. Totally tongue in cheek.

Dixie had some success but I believe heading in to the 4th quarter Pike was 12-23 for 139 yards. (Unofficially)

 

Towles on the other hand was 8-13 for 81 yards heading in to the 4th.

 

Both have very strong arms but Pike seems to get happy feet at times which leads to bad passes.

 

Towles definetly throws the better deep ball. Kid is as accurate as they come and if not for two dropped passes (to be fair, they were over the shoulder catches), Highlands tacks on two more td's.

 

Pike definetly had more than a handful of passes that were behind is receivers or a little high which led to drops.

 

Both are good qbs but Towles seems to have a better pocket presence and more of a true qb.

 

It was very cool watching two D-1 QB's. That's the first time i've seen Pike play QB, he didn't play QB last year at Highlands. I think he has a lot of upside. His receivers dropped some easy ones too, if he had a Gold out there that would be something.

Gold was awesome tonight!! Patrick, not to shabby either. The D really played well tonight as well. Next up- Go Birds.....Beat Colonels!!

I disagree somewhat...early on, Dixie's success was up the middle. Second half, Highlands coaches made adjustments and Dixie couldn't run the ball, period.

 

I belive Pike finished with less than 40 yards on 13 or 14 carries.

 

I couple of runs up the middle of 5-10 yards early on does not constitute being able to run up the middle on Highlands. You made my point. Highlands adjusted and Dixie could not run the ball consistently.

UH! Could that be because Highlands did not blitz but a few times tonite? I do give Dixie credit for hanging in there and believing they might win. I am not in agreement with the ball being overthrown by Pike. He has an above average arm for a HS qb but it wasnt that he was throwing it too hard it was because most of the balls he was throwing were either behing the receivers or because the receivers had alligator arms anticipating something they might have seen in a few scouting reports. Good game plan by Spritzky but overplayed Pike imo. Had absoulutely no business playing defense and even a kid as big as Pike cant take the beating the Birds gave him tonite physically. JMO. Maybe the game plan was to keep Pike in the pocket? Someone already commented that he had some issues with the accuracy of his throws. Maybe HHS thought Pike is more dangereous when it is a broken play and he is scrambling.

Highlands fans getting a little un-nerved tonight.

 

Seriously? It wasn't like the outcome was ever in doubt. It was 14-0 before we got to our seats in the romper room area of the stadium.

I thought the refs looked the other way a few times tonight. There was a borderline late hit out of bounds on the Dixie sideline by Highlands and no call, which I agreed with, but Dixie fans wanted it. Then a couple of pushes ended with a Dixie player busting the Highlands player in the chops, again no call, and one really, really obvious illegal motion call against Dixie when the receiver was not set for a second and then moved forward looked at the ref, the ball was snapped and once again, no call.
