Criteria For Winning a HSFB National Championship

Featured Replies

What does everyone think that a team needs to do to finish # 1 in the final USA Today or Rivalshigh or Espnrise poll?

Here are some of my thoughts

1. Win over a number of years

2. Play the right amount of top competition (Nationally recognized teams)

3. Have multiple division 1 players or 1 big name

4. Blow teams out

5. ?

Would be interesting to see how often teams from states other than CA, TX, FL and OH end up ranked first.

That was my answer. Be from one of those states.

I think that Rob's first point (winning over a number of years) is critical. If you take a look at the USA Today Super 25 in any given week, you will see a lot of the "usual suspects," teams that do well year-in and year-out. I know that it does happen (heck, look at what happened in 1991 when Clark County was nationally ranked), but it's rare that a completely unknown team comes out of nowhere during one season and gets ranked.

The rankings guys also look at where the team is located (whether it's in a good football state) and strength of schedule.

A good marketing campaign...

I think a team needs to go on the road, along with the other things mentioned. If Highlands, Trinity, etc. want a chance to win the MNC they need to schedule a trip to one of the big shots in Texas or Florida. Ohio games are nice, but that can only get you so much recognition because it's so close. If you go down a beat a Trinity (Texas) or Northwestern in Florida, you'll get some votes from that part of the country, and some from around the country as well.

The national HSFB championship is the most absurd thing ever created by HS sports fans.

It's up there, that's for sure.

In response to the original question - not be from Kentucky.

Didn't a team from Jersey win USA Today's poll last year- Don Bosco, right?

I think you're right. I'd love to see a year by year.

So do you think they should not have any polls, or what is a better alternative?

Indeed, I'm not saying by any means what so ever that Highlands didn't deserve any of the accolades that they received, but they did have a stud athlete in Collinworth and you've gotta admit that it probably helped with their national recognition. I'm not implying that it was their only reason for being ranked as high as they were but to say it didn't help them would be naive.
