I had no idea how good Moeller used to be a few decades ago, I knew they were good but WOW. Also did NOT realize that St. X split the Nat'l title in 2007.

The national HSFB championship is the most absurd thing ever created by HS sports fans.

While I am always looking at the various rankings when they come out every week, I will offer that thse kinds of things (i.e., national rankings) are a very slippery slope.

 

Many people argue that with the increasing amount of national attention some of these high school football teams receive, from the various rankings services and the fact that there are high school football games televised nationally every week now, plus the increasing number of games between "national power" teams not geographically close to each other (heck, earlier this season a team from LA traveled to Georgia to play a game!), that the game is becoming more and more like the college game, and with that comes a lot of potential negatives, like the possibility of money entering the picture (as it has in the college game) or these players developing a bigger ego and sense of entitlement.

 

One big "plus" about the high school game is that it seems "purer" than college or pro football; the players are really in it for love of the sport. The more high school football gets away from that, the worse if could be for the high school game.

 

Heck, the explosion in internet-based prep sports discussion boards like BGP is tied in with this phenomenon. We discuss these games and teams with a great deal of passion. In doing so, it's easy to forget that we are talking about 15, 16 and 17- year old kids who have enough to contend with in adolescent development alone, not to mention having to hear about the pros and cons of their football performance discussed publicly on a daily basis.

In the 80's, Moeller was a National Power and everyone knew who they were.

Good enough to get Gerry Faust a job at Notre Dame. They were a beast when I was in school. I didn't realize that they continued their dominance into the 80's.

Why though? It doesn't hurt anything and it is great promotion for the program.

 

My opinion - and it's just an opinion - somebody might actually believe that they won something.
