September 22, 201016 yr Go to page 11 of this report and you will see that 29% of KY adults have a college degree which is 4th lowest in the country. Not a total surprise. http://www.luminafoundation.org/publications/A_stronger_nation.pdf
September 22, 201016 yr But doesn't that make us sum thin' like 44th highest? You gotta look at it as the red solo cup half full...of sum thin, anyway.
September 22, 201016 yr One item I would like a clarification on. The Associate Degree does not include vocational degrees or are they included in this category? If they are, we are low. If not, what percentage of the population earns a vocational degree? That is where the educational elites are off base in preparing our youth for the real world. College is not for everyone, yet everyone should be encouraged to explore the possibilty of going to college. If that is not for them then vocational school or the military should be options for future training and education.

Study out recently that says the biggest problem for people getting into the military now is obesity. I know, off topic.

Many kids now finish a four-year college and then end up taking vocation-specific classes . I'm guessing this study only includes traditional college degrees. However, even if that's true we can assume that all the other 49 states have many folks with vocational degrees as well so relatively speaking we would still be very low.

When did we stop wanting smart, educated, learned people in society? It almost seems like many people think lack of education is a virtue - they have "real" knowledge, who needs furthering of knowledge and degrees.
September 22, 201016 yr I don't have a college degree. I'm one of the stupid ones. Neither do I. My wife went to college for 5 years and I make more then she does.

I can't get a degree in plumbing at a traditional college. Same for electricians. Same now for some of the green jobs or technical jobs.

September 22, 201016 yr A little wonder why KY is such a strong hold for conservative political thinking.
September 22, 201016 yr I still intend (someday) to get some sort of degree in something. But, having made choices early in life that led to me having to fantastic children, I won't spend any time regretting those. I make decent money, have a secure job and actually am proud of where I am despite being uneducated. But don't mistake that for being proud of being uneducated.

I'll take you're "uneducated" life perspective and knowledge over many degreed folk. My child had a teacher that used to tell the kids that if they didn't start acting better and working harder then they would "end up like those guys working outside." Perfect Catholic/Christian philosophy that always resulted in me meeting with the administration to explain why that comment was both ignorant and insensitive.
