KY 4th Lowest College Grad %

Featured Replies

No college degree doesn't always mean uneducated, jobless, poor, etc.

But surely the vast majority of folks aren't doing cartwheels over the Commonwealth's standing here (some of the comments here notwithstanding). Big picture - do our government officials, educators, etc., have plans for improvement?

For example - I keep hearing about plans for UK to become a Top 20 public research university in 10 more years. How will we know when this status has been achieved? Will this attract more of the Commonwealth's "best and brightest"? And perhaps more importantly, will they stay?

We're not the worst...We're not the worst....We're not the worst.... (the Kentucky Victory song (which by the way is used by UK football fans quiet (Kentucky version of quite) frequently))

Why is "education" considered "elite?" When did we stop wanting smart, educated, learned people in society? It almost seems like many people think lack of education is a virtue - they have "real" knowledge, who needs furthering of knowledge and degrees.

The 'educational elite' I am referring to are those who sit in offices somewhere discussing educational theory, that has little to do with the real world. These people are the typical 'utopians' that are divorced from how the world works.

I don't know of anyone who sits in an office somewhere discussing educational theory. I am the chair of the "Zero Dropout/100% Graduation" committee for my school district. One of the people on my committee is one of the associate commissioners of at KDE - she also has children in the district.

Kentucky is creating a new holistic evaluation tool for teachers and principals. How is it being done? With input from 23 school districts who are going to create and pilot the tool.

Marzano is one of the "elite" educational gurus right now. He doesn't sit around and pontificate, he does RESEARCH. He then writes about best practices and creates theories about what works and why.

A little wonder why KY is such a strong hold for conservative political thinking. :D

Or liberal leadership.

Or liberal leadership.

Surely you do not think that Beshear, Patton, Wilkinson, or Brown are/were liberal. They are democrats, but they are not/were not liberal.

Stumbo and Williams - conservative and more conservative.

Kentucky has NEVER had liberal leadership.

Much like California's Republicans would be Democrats anywhere else, Kentucky's Democrats would likely be Republicans anywhere else.

Lighten up Francis. You're right, it's the Democrat leadership that has failed.

Research from other 'educational elitists'. Most of these people have little knowledge of what works in the classroom. Either they were never there or they left the classroom and have forgotten what goes on in the classroom. They buy into the 'educational elite' thinking in order to keep their job. They have little understanding of average life because they have never run a business or have been on the government payroll for so long, they have bought into a utopian belief that will never happen.
