Actually what it means is when Highlands plays really good teams, then they are the underdog, and don't have a very good record. It is easy to be the bully against patsies.

Again, focus. You're all over the place. It seems like your throwing mud against a wall to see what sticks.

Have a nice day.

I'd leave too after proven to be wrong. Enjoy the season. I have no doubt Highlands will win #20 this year. There is no competition for them in 5A in Kentucky.

Thank you jbwill and it proves my point in post #75.

No prob!

History, I think the reason you and a bunch of HHS fans keep butting heads over this issue is because of the following:

HHS fans will point to Highlands' recent schedules as evidence that Coach Mueller and Highlands don't dodge opponents. You are absolutely correct that HHS has a poor W-L record against top-tier teams from Cincy and Louisville. But HHS fans will point to that poor record as the proof that HHS doesn't dodge programs or shy away from tough games. About every year Coach Mueller has put one of these top-tier teams on the schedule, and about every year HHS has lost (not every year, but most years). If Coach Mueller were only interested in padding his W-L stats he would have dropped the first-rate opponents back in 2002 or so, when it became clear HHS was struggling in these games.

You, on the other hand, point to the fact that HHS typically schedules only one of these top-tier opponents per year (and then usually loses) when asserting that HHS does not deserve to be considered in any kind of national title talk. Your position is very reasonable, in my opinion (although the folks over at USA Today don't seem to see it that way). However, this is totally different than the matter of whether Highlands ducks opponents.

I think you are right on the issue of scheduling and national title contention. The state of KY isn't strong enough in football for a KY team to receive high marks WITHOUT taking on and beating high-quality out-of-state opponents AND/OR the very best KY programs (like Trinity). Therefore, if HHS wants to be considered in the national title hunt on a consistent basis, they will have to make sure they play such teams every year (and win these games). However, that is a totally separate issue from whether HHS ducks T and X. Again, why would HHS agree to play Colerain but not Trinity?

In fairness to Coach Mueller on the matter of national title contention, I have not heard him talk about HHS finishing first in the nation during interviews of him this year. I think that last year was the only year he talked a great deal about HHS deserving to be ranked very high nationally. I could be wrong about this...

I think everyone needs to check their ego at the door and reread their posts before hitting submit.

LOL:clap:

So History, is there anyway us HHS fans can see where your team stands on their scheduling year in and year out. Us HHS fans would like to compare.

The word "us" was used properly in this post.

I concur. How does Highlands schedule compare to your school?

Hmm..I am sorry who is changing the subject?

So, that would be a record of 4-13 for the games listed above.

JB, I think you forgot the WIN with Trinity in 2000.

Hmm..I am sorry who is changing the subject?

Yes, you have heard my rant on Highlands scheduling and you have no come back in regards to the games listed above. In fact you say in post 75 that Highlands does play good games. Now how does your teams schedule stack up to Highlands? Either you are someone who works for Bluegrasspreps or you are ashamed of your school or you feel the need to ATTEMPT to tear down one of the greatest football programs in the HISTORY of high school football by saying they have a weak schedule.

My team-if I have one- has nothing to do with this discussion. I do not work for Bluegrasspreps. I am not ashamed of my school. I have nothing but praise for the Bluebirds, and nothing I could ever do would diminish the 19 crowns that Highlands has.

My points are that when Highlands does schedule other football powerhouses that their record isn't that stellar. I believe Dale strategically schedules a tough game every year and hope he wins that on the way to the state championship.

I do laugh at any talk of Highlands being national champions, and sincerely hope they will schedule St. X or Trinity every year moving forward as I believe it will be good for Kentucky's high school football to have the titans meet. Does anyone question that Trinity and Highlands are busy counting who has the most state championships? Nobody will come close to beating Highlands this year so there is number 20. Trinity i believe will win too, but at least they have a legitimate challenger in St. X.

Too many great BGP members have PM'd me to let me know those discussions are in the works, and I say fantastic. To have Highlands and Trinity only to have played twice in their outstanding programs I believe shortchanges we the fans of high school football in Kentucky. It would be the equivalent of the best NFC and AFC teams never playing.

So why not continue to build the program until they are able to have a good record against those teams, and at that point schedule them more often? Even at that Cincinnati football is better than Louisville football. I assume you don't live in Northern Kentucky, so you may not understand how close Highlands is to the Cincinnati teams that are much more nationally recognized. Wins over those programs are much bigger on a national scale as opposed to Louisville teams.

You keep talking about Highlands is never going to be national champions, but top 10 is scary close to being national champs.

JB, I think you forgot the WIN with Trinity in 2000.

Duh... I can't believe I forgot that game!

Go 'Birds!

History, consider this...

Everyone knows that the process of crowning a mythical national champion entails complete guesswork and speculation, since there is not anything even closely resembling a national-scale playoff. Can we both agree on this?

Given how speculative and arbitrary the process is, there really isn't any team that can legitimately claim to be the best in the entire country. Every year, there is debate about whether the mythical champion deserves to be crowned as such, and in a lot of years there are multiple national champions, as different national rankings services often crown different champions. So, whether a team plays a lot of tough opponents or whether they don't, ultimately it doesn't matter... the rankings are still arbitrary either way.

Clearly, Coach Mueller has set up a nice situation for Highlands. He has been able to schedule seasons so that his teams have the possibility of finishing the season ranked nationally. Coach Mueller has been at HHS since 1994. His HHS squads have been ranked in at least one national top-25 ranking service at the end of 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2004, 2007 and 2009. Plus, he got his team as high as third in 2009.

So, why again do you think Highlands' scheduling in laughable? Coach Mueller has stated on occasion that national rankings mean something to him. If they do, then I'd say he's done a darned fine job of getting his teams in the position to be ranked nationally (especially when considering that HHS was only nationally ranked once - in 1982 - before he took over).

Why, then, would he want to change his scheduling philosophy? You have said that it's bad for KY prep football and football fans such as yourself that HHS doesn't "schedule up" more. Is it Coach Mueller's job to consider yours or any fans' likes and dislikes first and foremost? From what I know of him, he cares a great deal about winning state titles, and to a lesser degree, winning as many games as he can and obtaining some national recognition for his teams. He seems to be accomplishing those goals quite well, wouldn't you say?

Coach Mueller has managed to win a state record-tying eight football titles as head coach, have his teams finish the season nationally ranked seven times, play (and win) in the nation's premier (at least at that time) national prep football event (the Herbie in 2007), play at Paul Brown Stadium on multiple occasions in games televised locally, and host a nationally televised game (which his team won). Heck, his third-place finish last year was the highest for any KY prep team since the USA Today started ranking teams in 1982. HHS, under Mueller, is the only KY team to win a game in the Herbie. He's absolutely dominated the series with HHS' archrival, CovCath. What more does the guy need to do as head coach of a team in KY that has about 400 boys in grades 9-12??????

And this is not only directed toward History, but also some of the Highlands posters who come on here and do some second-guessing of Coach Mueller. Seriously, what more does the guy have to do to prove himself? Cause I sure would like to know...

At the risk of HROAOA, I have said all I need to on this matter. I look forward to the future when the Bluebirds and the Tigers of St. X or the Shamrocks of Trinity play.

jbwil-who won the Colerain/Highlands game last night? Your internet guys were not on. j/k :D
