Kickoff Rule Clarification

Featured Replies

Curious what the thinking is that does not allow the kick returner to advance the ball out of the end zone on kickoffs?

It is the prevailing theory that it prevents injuries.

I like it. It is advantage to the defense (if you have a good kicker)

Kicking to the end zone is an advantage ot the kicking team regardless...I don't like it at all. I've never heard the theory that it prevents injuries, and am having trouble figuring that one out...but I've never heard a reason.

I assumed that was the case but it strikes me as odd that this one scenario is singled out as more accident prone than others within the field of play.

I would think that a punt return was more risky than a kickoff.

Sometimes I think people forget that Football is a contact sport by design.

It has always struck me as curious. Especially since fumble recoveries and interceptions are allowed to be returned out of the end zone.

You've got 11 guys going full speed for about 20+ yards before being touched, so quite different from punts and int returns.

True but almost all of the collisions are still going to happen on the kickoff return anyway, even if it goes into the end zone. The coverage team still has to sprint downfield and the blockers still have to try to block them up until the ball is blown dead.

Not defending it. Just simply stating punts and int returns do not compare.

Personally I think it is a lame rule. I think they should have the option to return it out if they want to.

One of the hardest hits I have ever seen happened on a punt return when the punt returner got bulldozed while waiting for the ball. He never saw the hit coming.

What exactly is the touch back rule? Was at a game. Return man's back foot was in the endzone when he caught the ball. I always thought that was a touch back. Ref allowed him to return it.

Doesnt matter where the body is. Its where the ball is. If the ball crosses the goal line then its dead. He can have both feet fully in the endzone, but as long as he extends his arms out and catches the ball and it never crosses then go for it.

While we are on it, can somebody tell me if the rule has changed in HS about breaking a huddle with 12? Just curious, it happened once for sure the other nite in the HHS/Ryle game on an extra point attempt and pretty sure it happenend one other time during a regular play. Anybody?
