Votto is Arbirtation Eligible

Featured Replies

No that's not what I meant. They will have to pay 10 Mil+ a year in a long-term deal.

More like 15-20 Mil IMO....

If the Reds even thought about letting Votto go, every person in the organization should be burned at the stake. :D

I doubt the Reds pay that.

Votto is under team control for quite some time, so "losing him" or "letting him walk" is not even a possibility.

He will get around $7 million in arbitration. Maybe a little more, maybe a little less.

Regarding the prospects of a long-term deal: I think it would be wise to simply offer him arbitration & see what he does next season. He is under team control through 2013 & would become a free agent in 2014. By that time, we'll have a clearer picture of how Votto stacks up to the rest of the elite 1st baseman.

I'd imagine a long-term deal (6-7 years) would take close to $85 million.

They don't have a choice.

They do really have a choice with Alonso sitting @ Louisville and hitting the ball very welll right now. I hope they do not take that route but you never know what the small maket teams will do with star players. They may let him go to arbitration and try to trade him and get value before he is eligible for free agency.

I agree with this. The team really gains nothing if he signs a long term deal now. Lots can happen between now and when Votto has options. The only way I would sign him to a LTD, is if Joey wants it and is willing to sign what all would consider below market. Heck, I think Joey even gains more by playing out thru the arbitration process. Keeps his options for signing with other teams who may be willing to pay more in a few years.

If they trade Votto within the next 2 years I will no longer be a Reds fan.

If they trade Votto in the next 2 years, we should get a ton of talent in return. I'd love for Votto to be a lifelong Red, but I don't see that happening.

The more I think about it, the more I hope that the Reds actually avoid giving Votto a long-term deal now. Although it'd be nice to have him locked up in Cincinnati, the deal would dramatically decrease payroll flexibility. We're just now overcoming some of the big contracts in the past. Milwaukee was in a similar situation to us a few years ago and whatever they did did not work out well either.

The good news is that Volquez has pitched so poorly that he won't get much from arbitration...

He won't get that much.

Why not? His numbers are comparable to guys like Howard, Morneau, even Pujols...Maybe he won't get that much from the Reds, but I'd be willing to bet he could on the open market.

I'd like to see him locked up. Money spent in the past was not money well spent. This would be.

Here is a great link regarding Votto's potential arbitration:

Nice article, and after looking at the numbers I think 7+ million is guaranteed. Since he's property of the Reds for a few more seasons I say go to arbitration while you can. Give him some extra meal money while avoiding locking up too much money in the immediate future. He's only 27, just hitting his prime so no sense in jumping the gun when you don't have to.
