Votto is Arbirtation Eligible

I'd like to see him locked up. Money spent in the past was not money well spent. This would be.

What do the Reds gain by locking him to to LTD before next season? The only thing that strikes me is that it is a signal to the fans that they want Joey to play for them for a long time. The negative financial impacts to making a deal like this certainly outweigh any benefits they will see. Signing to a LTD now will be a major hit on the budget, which in reality they do not need to absorb for a few more seasons. By not signing him does not tell Joey that they do not want him here and that he is not part of the future.

I tend to agree with you on this. :thumb:

Without a doubt, I would offer Joey Votto a long term deal; however, I would hold off until the end of next season (or maybe the end of 2012 season) before locking him up. He's already under team control and his stock is at an all-time high right now. Hopefully he continues to produce, but he's under team control regardless. Since he's under contract for so long right now, it's highly unlikely that he'll take a discount to secure his future (through, for example, 2020).

I must admit that a part of me hope's Votto's past emotional issues & support system (the host family from Dayton) provide some sort of incentive(s) for him to stay in Cincinnati.

Why not? His numbers are comparable to guys like Howard, Morneau, even Pujols...Maybe he won't get that much from the Reds, but I'd be willing to bet he could on the open market.

He won't get that much because of years experience. He will not be on the open market until 2014.

I'm not talking about arbirtation...I'm talking long-term deal.

He won't get Pujols, Morneau, Howard numbers in a long term deal either. Players with that little experience do not get those long term deals for that much money.
