It's a very good question. I know a lot of people who are "out of work," went back to school to get an associates degree and are still struggling to find any work. Some were employed but not in the field they went back to study in. All this having had a good job in the past for 20+ years only to see it go away. It's hard for people in thier 50's to retool and my hat is off to those I've known who are trying.

Sad to say, I see little hope in any of those coming back.

How long do you stay in a city with 20% unemployment / county with 14% before you realize it might be time to move where there is work?

I think some here are just very naive. I have a good friend who went to a local company's job fair, because the company had promoted the fact that they would be hiring approx. 200 people for jobs that he was over qualified for and would make substantially less than he made for over 20 years as a middle manager with a Fortune 500 company. He told me that he was pulled off to the side at the job fair and told that he was over qualified for the jobs they were hiring for, and that they would keep him in mind for any future openings that might fit his qualifications. He was very adamant in the fact that he would work for any wage, he just wanted to earn his way into the company and work his way up the ladder. They were not interested.

 

Sadly, I know for a fact that there are many cases just like the one I described. People that are critical just forget the fact that these people were working, they were NOT parasites. They were not collecting welfare. They want a job. So, can someone explain to me what a person is supposed to do when they are told they are "over qualified", when they are willing to work for any wage?

Perhaps start your own company. People need to realize when you work for someone else, you are always susceptible to being laid off. To think not is being naive.

I know that the place I work have turned down people...MANY people for being over qualified...people who have worked in my industry for a decade or more.

How do we fault a person who was making 70K for turning down a $10/hr job? They are most likely putting kids through college, have mortgages, etc. $10/hr won't pay the bills. Shoot, $10 an hour won't pay MY bills and I'm done with the college thing and don't have a mortgage. Do those of you who eschew these people propose that they must simply sell the home, stop paying tuition? Do you know how many $10/hr job people are out of work and now live in transitional housing in homeless shelters with their young children? Do you know how many are out there that are making that wage and find their hours cut, were living modestly, but lost their homes and now live in homeless shelters? If you're interested in learning, I'm happy to introduce you to many. I'm personally acquainted with so many that it makes my heart hurt.

You keep trying. No one said everyone on unemployment is a dead beat. There are plenty of honest hard working people that just can't catch a break. But that also doesn't change the fact that there are plenty of low lifes that are taking advantage of the system. Right now we are hiring for a warehouse/delivery position. I guarantee you if we got a resume from someone who was in managment making $70k a year he probably wouldn't get an interview. That's not saying he couldn't do the job but we aren't going go through the hassle knowing there is no chance he will be in it for the long term.

I agree with just about all except the bolded part, personally I do find fault in somebody turning down a job. If one $10/hr job isn't enough, get 2 jobs. I believe you do what you have to do to take care of your family. I firmly believe that at some point in time things will begin to get better, and then they can get a better job and go back to one job.

 

But one thing I know for certain, it is easier to get a job when you have a job.

 

I know people who are on UE that are looking hard for jobs, and would take whatever they can get (and most of these folks are now working). I know people who are UE that have turned jobs down because they would make about the same for doing nothing (and they would rather do nothing). And, I know people who are working, getting paid cash, and are still drawing UE.

You need to cool your jets. I asked the question for discussion, nothing more. When the unemployment level in your area is twice the national average what other choice do you have? Even if and when we pull out of this jobs most likely won't be in your area. You can't expect to draw unemployment for the rest of your life because you won't move where there are jobs.

There are 5 applicants for every job in our country. Where do the other 4 people go to work, much less get a second job. There are not enough jobs to meet the demand anywhere. Can you name me one community that doesn't have enough workers for the jobs they have?
